Any idea what this is?

I changed the oil and this was stuck to the magnetic drain plug. I attached two photos to show it has a slight concave shape. I strained the oil and found no other metal, the engine is a side-oiler and runs good - no symptoms. Any clues?

No idea, but you know it sticks to a magnet. It wouldn't hurt to pop the valve covers off and have a look-see just in case.

kevins2 11-25-2022 11:54 AM

Thanks, I’ll do that.

Piece of a valve spring? Can't imagine it a piece of a valve seat without having some poor performance. The radius throws me.

PaulProe 11-25-2022 04:54 PM

Kevin
Do some reverse engineering on the radius to determine what the diameter was, approximately. Will help you to narrow the search.

Depending on size, could be a part of a snap ring from a lifter, part of a ring, part of a piston pin keeper, maybe a chip off the distributor gear

Just some ideas

Paul

Good idea Paul. I’ve got a bin full of washers of various sizes that will enable me to approximate the diameter. I’ll do that tomorrow.

kevins2 11-26-2022 07:00 AM

By comparing the curvature of this piece of metal to various size washers, the diameter is 1".

Its a Kunooder

Kevin,

Dumb question #xxx37: could it be part of the oil pan?

Tom

kevins2 11-28-2022 06:15 PM

Tom,
Not a dumb question. I have no idea what it is. Will start inspecting everything I can as soon as I can get to it.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,
Unrelated to conversation, but really like your paint choice, what red is it? I have a Unique being built and going to paint soon. Trying to decide on color.

kevins2 11-29-2022 06:19 AM

Hi Razor,

It is a GM color used on many different vehicles from Corvettes to trucks until around 2012 or 2013. After that, GM replaced it with a slightly different red called Crystal Red Tint. It was available in both two and three stage configurations - I went with two stage.

Red Jewel, GM code WA301N, PPG 908589. The stripes are Evoke Gray, GM code WA354N, PPG 918801

The way it is slightly bent, I suspect it is part of a locking washer. The type where you tighten the nut/bolt and then hammer the edge of the washer up to lock it in place. Sometimes the hammering can cause a fracture crack where it bends up against the fastener.

Not familiar with the assembly of the side oiler. Take a look in the manual ans see if you can locate such use internally. I would not be too concerned if that is where it came from.

If you are seriously concerned, you can take a sample of your oil to an aircraft oil analyzer company, and they can see if there is an unexpected amount of metal in the oil.

Looks like a piece of the valley pan.

Kevin,

Thanks for the info, you have an awesome looking car.

I’m still hoping one of the resident engine builders will recognize it.

Buzz 11-30-2022 06:29 AM

The only thing I can visualize is maybe a chunk of a broken section of dipstick tubing? A piece of the pressed/rolled section at the upper left of this image?

Does your engine have a valley pan?

looks like a part of a washer that goes around the valve spring.
