If the alternator wire is less than 4 feet, 10 gage is OK. Any longer and I would tend toward 8 gage. If the wire isn't well protected, a fusible link is nice - but that's just one more thing to break at an inopportune time.
I've got lots of drawings from our manual, and I've been working on a "universal" troubleshooting book for about 10 years. I try to document most of what I've done anyway, so making the first drawing was just a matter of merging two others. The second is in our wiring unstructions.
