Do you have any dyno sheets for a 514 crate engine from Ford? I have been looking (BIB knows) for dyno sheets for the latest generation 514's with the eagle rods. You said 650 out of the box, at what rpm?
I am ordering a 514 for my new SPF, and was thinking about spending some money on a dyno. But if you know......;) Great Asp :MECOOL: |
Good advice Great ASP! But I been thinking "ALL" what Back in Black said last night, and that was ,"It's better to have it (HP)and not need it rather than need it and not have it" WOW! So profound, really! Back in Black, your right, I rather have it, tame it and only use it when I need it, IF EVER! HaHa!! ***Rodney***

Great ASP. Don't think there was a Dino sheet in the crate. The car is ready to go, unfortunatlye, I am out of town yet. Will have to check with the mechanic and make sure I get it if there was one. I know there was information on oil pressure that the engine tested at, maybe there is more info.

As far as revs and such....
Have a crank position sensor and rev limiter installed on any motor you decide on. You also can have a shift light installed. (Important if you go with manual tranny)
Going with MSD ignition will get you a great spark and let you install all those goodies too. Be sure to have an MSD Blaster coil installed too. |

Have all the MSD goodies. Whats the crank position sensor do? Never heard of that one. Have TKO/5 Spd. Does the shift light run off the tach? Is that any better than watching the tach? Whats the advantage? Thanks for the ideas. |
Answers from this amateur
Well, as I understand it, the crank position sensor gives a nuch more accurate and reliable reading of the RPMs, and makes accurate Top Dead Center reading much easier (for timing of spark delivery)
As to the shift light, when you are lighting the monster up, there will be NO NO NO NO time or ability to look at the TACH !! If you do look down at the tach, it's likely disaster time...you have to look where you are going, street or strip or track, or it's *sayonara*  The light gives you a nice peripheral notification that it's time to *switch* gears. |
Shift Light
BIB and Jahred,
I was reluctant to put the shift light in SPF 992, as i like the original look. I may go to a "swing-down" mount under the dash, so when i want the light I can have it. With the 3:73 rear end and the standard TKO tranny, 1st gear is forgiving to the rest of the drive train, but you bounce off the rev limiter quick. What are you guys going to use for a chip? 6000, 6250 (peak horsepower), or what? Eric The Great Asp  |
I plan on running it at 6000 for a while, but admittedly, I have to drive it first and see how it sounds. There is so much torque at low RPM I am sure running the RPMs high is pretty much fools play and not a performance move.
|
Have you guys heard of or know of anyone using the Liberty "Pro-Shift" conversion. Was reading an artical in April's Car Craft about stick shifts for drag racing. Company President Craig Liberty states that some drivers opt for this option in their 5 speeds, but only convert the 3rd,4th and 5th gears and leaving 1st & 2nd stock with the bronze synchronizers. Wonder if going to this type of tranny option is extreme? How does the TKO hold up against 500-600lbs torque? ***Rodney***

I don't really want a visible shift light either, may incorporate it in the dash !
And as far as revs, I cannot imagine what advantage there would be in exceeding 6000 RPM, I mean, REALLY !
( Trying for that *Mother knows best* look :p ) |
I am confused
Okay, I do not want the maximum Horsepower at 6250 rpm as advertised? I want to use the torque? I understand that the torque will be there before the horsepower, but don't you want the max horsepower?
Eric the Confused Asp :MECOOL: |
Dear Eric the Confused Asp :
OK, tell me what the redline is? I can't find that out anywheres. Is it a secret known only to Ford Murdersports? :JEKYLHYDE
I don't wanna blow my motor, know what I mean? |
BIB, I will see John VerMeersch this weekend, I will ask him. I bet he knows...;)
If you go to www.fordracing.com and go to performance parts, they show max horsepower of 600, @ 6250 RPM. Now I know that torque is important to keep everything moving, but don't you want to use the max horsepower? Anyone? Eric the still, and often confused Great Asp :MECOOL: PS I just hope I can get my car by the Spring Fling |
Yeppers, 6250 max HP, BuT.....
The redline is ofTeN higher than the max HP peak...then the HP tapers off, and you can have a few 100 RPMs of safety factor, AND use the Max HP. (easy to see on a HP or torque chart)
But these motors (BB Ford) do NOT like to rev, so if no one will share the great JeDi SeCrEt, I am gonna stick with 6000 fer now :p OH, and as to delivery of cobras, imagine my predicament...I have been drooling over this cobra for 2 years now (From conception to present time) and still at least a month of SPRING to wait, MaYBe LoNGer. Sun is shining, and I wanna drive my POISSON girl! May crack first !!!! |
I can't see how the redline would be lower than the max hp. If the max hp is 6250, You can bet the redline is higher than that.
Otherwise, why would you not have a cam that produces a max power at 5800 rpm, 6k rev limit, and more power in the lower rpms? Either way, if it as my motor, I wouldn't be going over 6k until it was pretty broken in. -steve in nj- |
Remeber; Ford's redline considers that they can get the motors for free! :3DSMILE: The 514's are 2 bolt main blocks, and I don't think i'd push them past 6000. The lower half of the 460 has always been suspect because the main caps tend to 'crawl' at extended rpm...which is why the made 4 bolt main 429's back in the day. If you're going to use a 2 bolt main, i'd strongly recc'd a stud girdle. Even then, I would not push much past 6500 or so for any length of time. To be honest, with a big 385 series motor in a Cobra, there aint many times you're gonna NEED more than 5000 to make you're point! Only other consideration: OIL CAPACITY! Definitely run an extended oil pan, preferrably rear sump and run a high volume oil pump (I like Mellings). The more oil you can get in the system, the safer youre gonna be. I run a big pan, twin remote oil filters and an oil cooler...and i'm still scared shi*less that i'm gonna starve when I push the rpm limit.

WOW
I rode in a Superformance car this weekend for about 4 hours that had a 514 @ 600 HP crate engine. Only change was that it was using a Performer intake, dual plane.
This thing was scary. Blinding fast. It seemed to me that pressing on the gas pedal, gave you fun, more fun, lot's of fun, then insanity. Brutally fast. Great Asp :MECOOL: |
I spent about an hour and a half driving an SPF with over 600 lbs of torque this weekend and it hooked up very well.
It was incredibly fast but well behaved. I have always believed there is no substitute for cubic inches and now I know it. It is much easier to get that kind of reliable power from a big block, as in less stress and strain on the motor. I have had a 600 HP small block in an old Camaro but it was nothing like this. This car much easier to drive around town in than the Camaro ever thought of being at that power. It took about 6 hours for the smile to start disappearing from my face. :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: |
Scott:
Did you drive the blue/white SPF with the 520 built by Dean? I rode in that one too, and it was an all day smile. Bill |
The crime of it all. $.02.
Here's a guy running 11's with a 289. Another running 10's with a 351. Pick up any Ford magazine, and guys (and girls) are running 8's & 9's in Mustangs. Whatever you want is achievable, but what do you really want. If you're asking the question, "How big of a motor do I want, how much horsepower do I need?" and you don't already know the answer, consider this. These things can turn from fun, to fear, to disaster in a heartbeat if you begin your quest for todays worlds fastest production sports car with a 520 ci motor with the first turn of the key. 427 Cobras didn't set any sales records at the Ford dealers in '65 & '66. Ever wonder why? (Neither did the 427 Corvettes.) The crime of it all? You just spent $25,000 to $50,000, not to mention your time building your "Dream Machine", and your dream turns into a nightmare. The car has less than 1000 miles on it, and it's For Sale. And you're thinking, "OK, now what do I do with the rest of my life? Take up golf?" Or worse. Driving a Cobra takes some getting used to. It doesn't behave like your fathers Oldsmobile. Your reflexes are all wrong, and have to be reconditioned. So build your 302, or 351 Cobra. Drive it for awhile. Get to know it. Bite your lip if some kid in a Camaro cleans your clock at this point in time. As you and your Cobra get to know each other, it'll happen less frequently. After 6 months or a year, reasses your priorities. If more power is at the top of your list, put a bigger motor in it. And if it isn't, well just have fun with it (and us here on the forum). |
