My wimpy exhaust sound UPDATED
I hate that my car sounds so wimpy! A 427 with 12:1 compression and a pretty hot cam and it sound's...well, less than intimidating. Almost all of the cars I have heard lately sound 10 times better.
How can I modify my sidepipes, without cutting them completely apart, so that they aren't so tame? I'm open to any ideas. |
Yes, remove the 1 inch side pipes.
That should help some. ;) |
too loud/not loud enough
check out the active topics menu...there's a bunch of guys discussing how to make thier pipes quieter. maybe that can give you some ideas on what others are running. good luck. I prefer my SPF sound to the Elegant Motors sound. it's bit quieter- easier on the ears on long drives...

Talk to Roy Hunt at Finish Line Motors here in Vegas. He's got a new exhaust system for CSX cars that will get about a 60hp increase and they sound GOOD! VERY GOOD!!!
His number is (702) 643-7994 |
Turk and ERA535 have a new exhaust secret weapon that is 100% macho.. Thats all I can say.. See Turk or Pat for details..

Mike-
Just got back from the first test drive with the new exhaust....time to play with the jetting. Pat |
For what the hell its worth.......mine sounds great and I wouldn't change a thing!!!

I was told yesterday by a Harley owner that the Quebec Provincial Police (similar to state police but generally fatter) are going around sticking a probe up the Harley pipes and taking a decibel reading. No warning, first offence is $250. I am beginning to wonder if I will have to tone down my side pipes a bit.

Wayne,
If the herleys up there are like the harleys round here i could understand that but a cobra now thats a sweet sound. |
Thanks
Thanks for the ideas all. I will call Finish Line and see how much $$. Most parts for the CSX seem to be disproportionally expensive but I'll give it a shot. If it means $2,000 or more I'll probably cut these apart and see what I can do. Nothing to lose right?

Ken, you will be able to hear it in 2 weeks at the DVSF.
By the way, I think this is post #427 for me. I wonder why that rings a bell? Wayne |
I hope it is fixed!!
OK, so after cutting the sidepipes apart I found out they were pretty standard glass packs but the big news is they only had a total of an inch and 7/8 worth of hole to get all that big block exhaust out. No wonder the car stopped pulling at 5500 RPM.
I went to the local muffler shop and they cut the glass packs out and put in the Moroso Spiral Flow mufflers. The workmanship seems excellent but I won't know for a couple of weeks at least as the engine is still in the shop. I hope they fit the car and I hope for some bad ass sound. This may not be the most responsible solution to your complaints, but it will allow for you to meet new cops. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...CN0534-med.JPG TURK Good Luck. |
Scott,
I can't wait to hear the new sound. Hopefully it will fill Evergreen with the sweet sound of a big block on the 13th. Bran |
Wow Turk!! Thats sweet! ;)
|
Looks like someone else read some of the previous posts on mufflers and discovered Burns Stainless clamps. The work like a charm, and easy enough for Turk to use.
McFEZ with 4 sets of side pipes for what ever the mood is today. |
The pipes came out very nice.
The guy who built them was an artist! The guy who painted them?? I wouldn't have him over to my house again. The rest of the Gasholes have been trying to get me to post some of the pictures I took. They are especially interested in one particular photo. I declined so far, out of respect to you and also out of fear of offending Jamo. TURK |
Louder pipes? I had several customers who kept ear plugs in the door pocket of their cars to prevent going deaf during longer drives. I have received nasty looks from a motorcycle cop who heard me get on the throttle, but didn't see me until after I stopped and turned the corner. You can hear the pipes for miles and they are good at attracting cops, like flies on......

Wimpy Pipe Update
Here's an update on my exhaust / side pipe situation.
As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, I cut out the glasspacks and inserted a pair of Moroso Spiral Mufflers. Yesterday I had my new engine dynoed and after breakin and 24 or so passes with adjustments in timing, etc... we got the engine to produce 520 HP. We took the dyno headers off and mounted the headers and sidepipes that go with the car. Wow, am I ever glad I did this. The engine made 520HP at 6,400 RPM with the dyno headers going through the dyno's outside muffler system. With the new pipes on it made 505HP at 6,300 RPM. Only a 15 HP loss! And almost as important to me...the sound is awesome. Music! This is a good way to go for those that have too restrictive exhaust systems and/or wimpy sound. Scott... :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: |

You have, or HAD, a big block thats sounds wimpy? Could you elaborate? Was it loud enough? Was it the pitch, meaning did it not have a deep low rumble? I'm wondering because I just fired my 427FE for the first time and it was loud enough but not as much of a low rumble as I imagined. I don't have much to compare it to other than a friends Cobra that has a 351W, of which sound just as good if not a deeper. Have not compared side by side yet and it may just be too high expectations. I do have Webbers, do you think that may change the sound? |
