I have one on my car. Since I only have 9-10 inches of vacuum off the manifold, the power brake system just wouldn't work reliably.
As far as the noise, you can hear it but it's not bad at all. It just sounds like a small pump. I have a canister as well (I recommend this) and when I turn the key on, the pump runs for approximately 5 seconds and then shuts off. Doesn't run again until I apply the brakes a couple of times. Once the car is started, you'll never hear it over the pipes.
One advantage is that you have power brakes anytime the key is in the on position, whether or not the car is running.
