new holly fuel pump problem

Has anyone else noticed that Holly's "new and improved" 110gph fuel pump-hly12-289-11- not only uses a new diaphram design but also different shaped pump arm? Assuming they knew what they were doing,I installed it in my 351W. NO FUEL PRESSURE:mad: The cam eccentric just barely marked the edge of the arm. I took it to P.A.W. and compared it to a new Edelbrock pump. The Edel had the same design and arm as my old Holly pump and works fine, so I will send the Holly back to Summit. Is it me or did Holly get taken over by morons? %/

Yes!
I had to replace two Holley mechanical fuel pumps for an FE within the first 1000 miles. When I called Summit for a replacement they were 30 days back ordered!

Only way that is possible is if others also requested warranty replacements.
My guess is Holley sub contracted some of their products to other manufacturers, very likely of Oriental origins, and they screwed that batch up. At least that batch. Not too often Summit is back ordered 30 days on anything especially on something as common as an FE Mechanical fuel pump.
I went with a Carter since. No other choices I know of.

how come?

I'm sure you two, and I have seen other before, are using a mech pump for the looks right? A Holley Blue pumpseems an easy answer to he who does not know (me).

id advise never to use a holley for the street, They are not relaiable for long term use. They are ok for drag race only.had to change many on the side of the road. Will never do again. Use a mechanical Holley or Carter. My 2 cents You can hang it there by your cell for looks(gutted) if u like the look of em

I had the same problem with mine. Went to Carquest and bought an original Carter design (circa 1965) pump for $29 and it works beautifully.

On my second Holley electric pump now... (Summit HLY-12-801-1), it's supposed to be rated at 7psi, but I get anywhere from 5 to 12psi indicated. Kinda makes it hard to run crisp when the carbs are on the verge of flooding.

Will change to a Carter this winter.

Any "race type" fuel pump needs a regulaor before the carb(s) to keep the pressure stable, reguardless of what's stamped on the box. I still like mechanical pumps because their lifespan is longer so they don't die as often and leave you stuck on the side of the road.

update from holly tech

They are aware of the problem and said I must have gotten an early model-as if getting the pump arm right is rocket science. I assured him that Summit and PAW are still selling the "early" pumps. He said he'd pass the info to engineering....and another weekend is wasted:mad:

I agree that I should be running a regulator, but the Holley pump I have was recommended by the factory for street use without a regulator.

Quote:

"Improved design for street/strip applications "
"Pressure is pre-set at 7 PSI"
"Regulator is not required for most applications "

I guess the thing was set at the factory. All I know is that on any given day, I can see a variance of about 7psi. (P.S. Checked the gauge, it's OK.)

Would anyone have a picture of the location of the mechanical fuel pump. Did all year 302 's come with aplace to mount the pump, did they discontnu the mechanical pump attachment on the bl0ck when they went to fuel injection. New to Ford and trying to determine if I should stick with the noisy Holley electric fuel pump or go with a mechanical pump. thanks

I threw two Holleys away and got an Aeromotive. Never had a problem since.

i went thru 3 electric holley blues, and then switched to a carter . the blues would freeze and stop. if i smacked it with my calif duster handle it would start back up, or if i let it sit for 10 or more minutes to let it cool down, it would start.now, try doing either while driving on the freeway in center lane sandwhiched between semis when it quits. holley at the time confirmed my issues ( and fixes - true story ) admitting a bad build on some with my date codes which are stamped on the pumps . after 3 failed, bye bye blue and did the carter switchover, no more problems. bill.

Mechanical fuel pumps mount on the side of the timing chain cover which is between the water pump and the block on a Ford "W" engine. If you want to use a mechanical fuel pump, you will have to install an older type timing chain cover as well as the ecentric to drive it. This is a pain to do without removing the oil pan as you will almost certainly screw up the pan gasket when you try to get the old timing cover off. Oh, you also have to remove the damper off the crank to be able to get the cover off.

You are probably better to stick with the electric pump.

I, too, have a Holley blue pump that's on the blink. It shut down twice in one night last week and I'm ready to replace it. I'm hoping to find one that I can easily swap without any other modifications. Has anyone swapped another pump directly in place for the Holley blue? Perhaps an aeromotive or carter? If so, what was the make and model. If you did have to modify anything what was it? If I need to install a regulator does it just go in line near the carburator or is it more difficult of a project.

I switched to Carter # P60430, about $54 online + s/h. I carry a matching spare . No fuel pressure regulator required and mounts on drivers side inner side frame rail ahead of the gas tank where my previous kaput holleys were located. My install was by Craig Aylsworth, SPF owner and Detroit area SPF installer who gets them at the only place he has found to buy it... The 5.5psi pump :

The Aeromotive I replaced the Holley with mounted right in. It is about the same size.

Roscoe,
I guess your Aeromotive pump is still going strong ?

My Holley Blue froze up and died this afternoon. After an hour ride with no problems,it died at the entrance to my garage.Swapped it out with my backup Holley Black.

Question : Which Aeromotive are you using ???
Street/Strip AEI-11203
High Output Billet AEI- 11209
Drag Racing A2000 or A1000

Roscoe 04-04-2007 07:46 AM

Yes, I'm using the AEI-11203 with no problems. Throw that Holley away already.
