Autometer Gauge Question
Does anybody here use the Autometer gauges and how do they compare to the Smiths ?

We haven't used them yet, but we are installing them in our ERA. One issue that I have heard time and time again, especially with the Smith's is reliabilty. I would assume that the Autometer cobra series is like all other Autometers, so reliability isn't much of a question. Another benefit is the lighting. Both Smiths and Stewart Warners are difficult to read at night, so I hear. However, the Autometers are supposed to be much clearer. Unfortuneately, none of this comes from actualy experience, this is based off of what others, who do have experience, have said.

I replaced all my Guages with Autometer.FYI- Autoguage is NOT the same as Autometer.

My experience, never had a single failure with Autometer in race cars , street cars and off road vehicles, used for years and years. Smiths had two bad oil pressure out of two , lost one engine, two bad speedometer out of two. And none of them can you see at night very well. Call it bad luck or British engineering. Look great, and I have friends that have never had a problem with Smiths

I just bought the Autometers for the same reasons that Ike listed. I don't have the car yet, so I can't tell you how well they work. I can tell you that they do look good sitting on the dining room table:3DSMILE:

Are you giving the gauges to ERA? After we got them, I sent them out and ERA installed them in the dash instead of the SW's. |
Can't tell you how they compare with Smiths (never used them) but I'm using the Autometer Ultralites and no problems so far. I would agree with Ikestaa about the reliability of the different Autometer series, should be pretty much the same. As far as clarity, they are bright and easy to read (day and night). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Autometer=Quality
From all that I have heard, they are top of the line...
My set is the electric 289 FIA version(s) with 160 mph speedo...I bought them and shipped them to my manufacturer myself, and they look great......pic is in my photo gallery.. I will receive the car in about 2 weeks. I also have a high pressure fuel pressure guage with the optional isolation/sender unit, so the guage can be mounted in the cockpit safely. (THAT was exxxpen$ive) |
We are not marred to originality at Emerson MoterSports But we have used Smiths and SW What we found is almost any other gage is better. Our standard gage is the Classic Instruments hot rod series they look like the SW and can be had whit a bubble face. The quality is exultant, They are not cheep. We use a lot of the Autometers and have only had one failure. If you are building an aluminum car and you wont to put up whit pore performing gages in the name of originality it might make some sense. Bill E EMS

I've been running the Autometer Sportcomp guages for over 13k miles and two and a half years. No problems. The gauges are all electric except for fuel pressure.

That's exactly what I am going to do. I spoke to Bob Putnam when I ordered them and he told me to bring them up, which is fine with me because I have never installed mechanical gauges with brass tubing before. I assume yours are also mechanical. Where did you get the appropriate senders from? Did Southern Automotive provide them or are you getting them from ERA? Thanks, Mike |

Autometer makes guages that look just like the original Smiths - does anyone have pics or links to where I can view/buy them ?

I bought a set of the look-alike Autometers from Tri-States. Highland Daytona Racing also has them. I believe both are advertisers.

Using Autometer 5" Sport-Comp electric speedo and tach; Z-Series for the smaller instruments.
Great visibility during the day, and outstanding visibility at night. 12,000 miles on car. Not even a little bit original looking. Gives the dash more of a street rod look, but functional, and reliable. |
Just had 2 bad Autometer GPS senders in a row. went to a marine unit 80 dollars less and works grate.
