Can I open up the sidepipes?
Has anyone ever taken the "baffle'ing" out of their sidepipes and ran open pipes?!
just curious :D :D :D Blake |

Mine are practically open. I can use a flashlight and a small mirror at the outlet end and clearly see the four collector tubes at the other end. Makes for a wonderful sound. :D Mine came this way from Unique.

I don't know what B+B uses for baffling in their side pipes. Mine seem to be getting louder the more I drive it. Jim

Mine are pretty much straight pipes although I use a dynomax bullet track only muffler (find them at Summit). Not much in the way of baffle, as there's nothing restricting flow. Loud and sound great.

I can take the baffles out of my sidepipes very easily. Real loud and obnoxious. Just the way it should be!:3DSMILE:

I think there are two issues here. One is the baffling--it can be removed/replaced, etc. The other issue is the size of your collectors. A lot of them are around 2", which is really the restriction--not so much the baffles.
I had my pipes done. This consisted of cutting them open and opening the collector to 3", then put racing mufflers in and wow, what a difference. Sound is acceptable at idle (barely) and quite loud under throttle. Made a lot more power. I highly recommend this place: JBA Racing |
Blake, call Bryan and have Barry make you up a set of shorty's. Collector to turnout. No muffler in between.

Ron,
I was just going to have the local welding shop open them up, remove whatever is in there, and re-weld them... I started the motor with just the headers yesterday..man...drove down the driveway and back...lot's of "poppin", backfiring, etc... is that normal?? blake |

Maybe I can have them take "some" out but leave some in!? Not even sure what's really in the pipes.
what's the "shorty" method? blake |
Blake, why not use racing mufflers inside the pipes? That and opening the collector to 3" gave me a signifigant improvement.

I made my own sidepipes. I bought a cheap pair of 4" glass packs, cut them open and removed the core. Then I made my own cores by taking a piece of 3-1/2" pipe and milling slots in it that are 3/16" wide x 2" long. The slots run length-wise, all the way around and the full length of the core. I wrapped the core with stainless steel wool, slid the outer shell over it and rewelded. The more slots you mill in the core the quieter the pipe will be.
Performance is the same as 3-1/2" straight pipes. They are loud but the high pitch ringing is eliminated. I made these because my carbs are all calibrated for open headers. The standard straight core glass pack uses up to a 3" louvered core (in the 4" OD models) and I can't run them with out recalibrating my carb. Scott |
I went to go "inspect" the inside of the pipes just a few minutes ago...basically there is an insert with cut outs surrounded by fiberglass??
I think i will just take the fiberglass out... what effect will this have? thanks blake |
Not to bring down the "wrath of God" on me, but on the flip side of this discussion-- How would you quiet them down a bit.?????
|
I "blew out" the baffles in the Excal by simply downshifting WAY to early and hitting high rpm with the engine. Worked great, all though I wasn't TRYING to downshift early,,,,, That corner at the end of the straight comes up REAL fast and sometimes I got "nervous", lol.
Wouldn't recommend this method to anyone with an FE......... Ernie |
Blake,
My "mufflers" came from Butler Racing and were welded onto the short collector. The turnout is part of the muffler. If you want loud, they'll do it in spades. Calling them mufflers is almost a joke. Butler put in a spiral wound core and nothing else. They were loud new, but never changed. With my compression, they had a nice bark at idle and would just about take your head off when the rpm's were up! My engine was dynoed with them on the engine and it still made nearly 500hp. Oh, btw, dogs don't like them at all! There is a high pitched resonance that they can hear and we can't. Also, I never even had a cop look at me for the noise. Mostly they just grinned when they saw and heard the car. Try the Butlers. I guarantee you'll like them. Al |
My question is,
do I need to remove the inner part of the pipe? it's a insert of sorts with nickle sized holes bent, to create turbulence I assume..or should I leave it in there and just remove the fibeglass surrounding it?! blake |
scottj,
You put a 3.5" core inside a 4" pipe? Does that mean you only had 1/4" clearance to stuff the wool in? How may slots did you cut? |
DaveR,
Yes, yes, 91. Correction: not a 1/4", closer to .190 You can't believe it fits can you? I cut 13 slots around the circumference by 7 slots lengthwise over 24". I wrapped the core with a fine stainless steel wool from a 12" wide roll and wrapped that with wire to hold it tight. Then I took a tapered style piston ring compressor for a 4" bore and turned a step in it on the lathe so it could be tightened securely on the end of the 4" pipe. Then the core could be shoved in without snagging on the outer pipe. If you don't mind the look of a 5" pipe they could be allot quieter and still perform like an open pipe. Although a 3-1/2" core will never be "quiet". |
