Pully Gurus . . . . . HELP!!!

I just installed a Jegs high flow water pump. It is for a 79 - 85 5.0.

My crank and front damper are older out of a 302 with a 3 bolt dampner. Here's the problem. The new water pump fits and bolts on fine to the engine, except they moved the shaft and imperller a little lower in the housing in order to fit the bigger impeller. So now the top pully hits the lower pully and will not fit. They overlap by about 1/4". Each pully is 6" in diameter. The bottom pully is a three grove even though I only use one belt that drives the water pump and alternator. No PS, no AC.

So do they make a smaller diameter upper or lower pully that I can use to resolve this dilema?

Ed, try this site, check out their catalogue, I'm sure they'll have something that'll work...or call 'em if you don't see it.

Hi Ed,

No doubt March will have something for you - at a price!

If you're interested in a more budget-oriented approach, there are at least two: a Ford dealer and a wrecking yard.

You could take your present pulleys with you to a yard and get some really cheap ones, or if you can find a Ford dealer with an accommodating parts man, you can get new ones for probably less than 1/2 what March will charge you - been there done that!

By the way, my water pump pulley is slightly smaller than the crank pulley. Dunno how it is supposed to be for a small block? Hit the March web site and note their pulley dimensions - that'll give you an idea of what diameter ratios can work.

Hope this helps,

Tom

If your waterpump exits on the drivers side the pulleys will not line up if you have an older 3 bolt dampner. Also I think that the timing marks will not be in the correct postion also. Most all of the 3 bolt pulleys and dampners used a passenger side exit pump which has a slighlty shorter shaft.
