Firestone vs Goodyear
I am in need of replacing my tires. I currently have Yokohamo. Standard 235x60 & 295x50 15's. In looking at Tirerack, it seems that the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 beats in, almost everything, the Goodyear Eagle GT II. Used on a Comtemorary with Jag rear. 427 upfront.
It will be strictly street driven or at sub 85mph on the highway. Well…..most of the time anyway. Any one have real experience with these?? How are they in the rain?? Firestone has an incredible 50,000 mile tread life warranty! By the way, Carlisle really hurt the last 2 shows. |
You couldn't give me a Firestone tire for free. 95% of all of the "new" tires I have ever seen "fail for no reason" where Firestone.

one wouldn't normally expect to get 50,000 miles out of the rear tires on a Cobra with a 427 would they? :) |
I won't expect 50,000 but I only have 15,000+ on the Yok's.

I presume you are talking about the Firestone ss20 with raised white letters? JUNK. I was given a set of these for my truck, and they are horrible. Abysmal wet traction, and very poor road surface adhesion. I would NOT recommend these, even to a light footed driver of a car with traction issues. Just to prove non-bias, I do run Firestone SZ50Ep's on my 17" street rims..and they are a fantastic tire. Better than any Goodyear combination I have tried.

Just jettisoned the Firestones off my Dart. the front left started coming apart. That company just does not get it. Firestones = junk.

Goodyears only 10x better? why you @#$%^&*().. Goodyears are at least 13x better..
The truth is there are no really good 15" tires.. The best ones go 10-15k and give up.. The others are lacking something.. Most are greasy, some never get traction.. Get tires that A). are safe for the speed you drive, and B). Give you the best ride.. Look into some of the offbrands. They are mostly owned by BFG and Firestone, tend to cost less and it hurts less to replace them every other year.. Of course Firestones have been known to EXPLODE.. I got a set of Goodyear Eagle GTII's at Sams Club. 235's and 295's they were a special order and took a few days to get them but they were pretty reasonably priced there. |
I had the goodyear Eagle GTIIs on my SPF. 255X60 F and 275X60 R and switched to the Yokohama Avid STs. there is no comparison, the Yokos are better wet or dry, and on the track they really shine. the name just looks wierd on Cobra wheels. regardless, I would stick with the Yokos.

Don't know much about the 15" tires, though I understand the Eagle GTII is a decent street touring tire.
I have the Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP on my car, 17". They are a phenomenal tire. They stick better than any street compound tire I've used, and the wear I'm getting is incredible. I autox as often as I can and they have two hard open track events on them, and I have plenty of tread left and even wear. Definite two thumbs up! Though I do admit that when they eventually wear out, I plan to replace them with Kuhmo Victoracers, as I want the added grip. Steve |
I have sworn off Firestone tires forever. While Explorers were flipping over with great regularity, the Japanese CEO said he looked at the problem as "a fire on a distant shore". I replaced mine with Michelins, and Ford ate the cost eventually. I agree that Firestone just doesn't get it.

on the third set of tires for my 'vette I changed from the goodyear GSC's to Firestone Firehawk sz50's and the sz50's were
TWICE the tire that the GSC's were. better traction. better wear. shed water like nobodys business. and on top of that ...better price! now obviously they had some problems with a couple of batches of their truck tires but I have not had any of them. All I can say is that the couple of sets of performance tires that I have had were excellent tires. I would like to think that all of those INDY guys are not stupid:D ;) have a good one, Dan |
