Roscoe - Out of Service

Well, yesterday I rolled the car out of the garage and it would not fire (Hi Bill S.) A few minutes later it fired fine. Went on some errands where I had to turn it off and restart at least 4 times, no problem. Went to the in-laws to help out with something and the car sat a few hours. It would not start again. Car cranks fine but no spark. Fuel feed is fine also.

I found that I was getting no spark out of the coil. I have a MSD digital 6 plus box with blaster hi vibration coil and msd pro billet dist. I found a blaster 2 coil locally (he ripped me off) but that did not work either.

Towed it to friends garage (thanks Bill K) and today went through the msd troubleshooting instructions. No spark at the coil, even when jumping the dist wires, as instructed. We DO have power from the ignition to the box (red wire). Tried everything but I think there is a short in the box as no spark (power) is getting to the coil.

Distributor is fine, I assume, cause we are not even getting spark to the dist. Tried new coil wire also.

So I'll have to call tuesday to msd tech and see what they say. Hopefully I can send the box back for repair and not have to buy a competely new box.

Life sucks,
Roscoe

Oh yeah,,,,'cause you know Big Blocks never have an MSD fail. Unless Turk is "cooking something" up under the hood.

,,,now where did this wire go? :D

Roscoe, need a hand in going through the electrical system, let me know. Boy have I got experience with that lately. Also, have you tried disconnecting your tach??? Dwell problems with the MSD box have been known to rear their ugly heads on occasion..........

Roscoe 10-12-2003 04:24 PM

Bill,
Thanks, we did disconnect the tach last night but it did not help. At this point I don't think there is anything I haven't done. I am resigned to calling msd tech on tues.

Mine did that also;it turned out to be a faulty ground that I had hooked up to the back of the 6AL.I redid that and it fired right up. chuck

Well Roscoe

Let this be a leason to you. Don't go to the in-laws any more! I bet some how they had something to do with that water pump as well!

If you have power at the red 10 gage power lead, a good 10 gage ground (good battery???) check to be sure that there is power at the switched source for the small 16/18 gage red wire too. If you have power at both there is nothing on the phone that they can do for you. Their Website www.msdignition.com has their complete trouble shooting guide on it.
As Clois experienced recently many of the issues with MSD installation turn out to be something simple thaty is overlooked.

Roscoe 10-13-2003 08:13 AM

Rick,

That sounds like what I'll have to do. I have power at all the reds. It seems like there is no power going out to the coil.

Thanks,
Roscoe

No easy way out.
I once unknowingly "fliped" the magnet in the distributor while I was replacing the pickup. Thus changing the polarity and phasing of the distributor. I chased the problem for a month. The engine would start and run fine up to about 2800 rpm then begin missing and just running very poorly. I worked on carb, replaced plugs,"reset air gap on reluctor" changed plug wires and on and on and on. Not until I installed a point type distributor temporarily and found it ran fine did I focus on the original distributor. When I found the problem I felt real foolish. I had sent the MSD box 2 times back to the factory to have it checked and it came back with a clean bill of health.

Roscoe,

Don't go buy a new MSD Box I have an extra. The exact same thing has been happening to me. After replacing everything from the ignition switch, MSD Box, Coil, Plug wires, and Plugs we finally found my problem was the pickup in my distributor ($26.00) and can be replaced with the dist still in the car. Test your MSD Box I bet it is fine.

Go look at my post from last Friday regarding the same thing in SHOP TALK titled[b][color=blue]now it won't start..."

Good luck.

Clois

EDIT NOTE: I bet if you tried to push starrt your car it would!

Roscoe 10-13-2003 08:45 AM

Clois,
I saw your post. We tested the box and apparently there is no spark going to the coil or from the coil to the dist. The dist does not even come into play at this point. By the way, is your box a digital 6 plus?

Also, I have dual pickups in the dist and tried them both. Unlikely that both would be bad.

Just spoke to MSD, yes they are open. He said it is probably in the box. They will look at it, repair it and send it back for a cost of no more than 65.00. Not bad.

Roscoe, your local speed shop should be able to test your box. Call them first and take your box in to them before you spend the money.

Before you send it

One more thing before you send the box, is the coil good?

With verified voltage to the positive terminal, did you tap the negative side to ground?

Every time you hit ground, the coil should spark.

Hey, you can never tell about electrical in a car.

However, if the coil is good, you can not beat the $65.

Sorry to hear of your problem.

We tried two different coils and went through the troubleshooting sequences from MSD which included grounding the coil.
Thanks for the note,
Roscoe

Edley Rondinone 10-17-2003 07:37 PM

So, Roscoe, is it up and running yet?

Roscoe 10-18-2003 06:39 AM

MSD has my box and is testing it. So far they tell me the coil was good. Won't know till next week. Thanks for asking.
