New exhaust powder coating for sidepipes
Gents - I recently had my sidepipes powder coated by Sullivan's Powder Coating (325-695-2691) in Abilene, TX.
The exhaust powder coating material is new stuff. I had my pipes done over Christmas and they came out great. If I understand correctly, the exhaust powder coat is only heat rated to 850 degrees but I've had no peeling or burning of the powder coat. I'm not sure why, but even though exhaust gas temps are typically 1350 degrees or so, this stuff doesn't burn off (Sullivan's has tested this stuff above 1350 degrees). Anyway, the only color on the market right now is black. Maybe silver will be an option down the road. As for cost, it was $125 + shipping. Also, in the interest of fair disclosure, the owner (Dean) is a family member. Just an FYI that you now have another option beyond high temp paint and ceramic coating. Scott, SPF#1230 / 393 |
I have it too,,although I havent tried them out,,I got the powder from eastlands,they have 2 o3 3 colors,,if I remember it is rated for 900 degrees,,I have a buddy who powder coates,,they look great,,glad to hear they may hold up,,cost me 25 and half a 6 pack bucks do do mine,,Tim

I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but why wouldn't you ceramic coat in silver or black for approx $250? Mine were originallly Jet-Hot black, but I had the them re-done at a local ceramic coating shop in silver for that price. They look amazing, the durability is proven, and supposedly the ceramic allows for cooler header and engine temps. You can even polish them and they look new.
Serious question, is it to save $125 or just a preference? I can understand painting for those that don't want to bother removing the pipes, but if you have to remove them anyway......... |
Clay, it has been a while since I coated SPF 1301 pipes, but I don't think you can get ceramic coating in black. Any black is a form of powder coating, as the actual ceramic crystals are bright and shiney and cannot be made black. This may have changed in the last 18 months. As for why to do it. I like the look of black pipes on my titanium/black car.

I just had my sidepipes redone with a black ceramic coating after the high temp powder coating burnt off. I agree with clayfoushee. It isn't worth saving the $125. The ceramic is proven to perform to 2000 degrees. Best of luck with your powder coat.

What sort of finish does the Ceramic coating leave? I like the durability issues of ceramic coating but don't want a gloss finish. I would much prefer a semigloss or flat finish.

The black ceramic product is more a satin finish. It looks almost just like a powder-coated product. At least, I can't tell the difference. In fact, the processes in the two are probably related, but the ceramic content in the material offers cooling and durability advantages. The black ceramic product is DEFINITELY available and has been for awhile. My pipes were originally done at JetHot in 97-98. They were still in great shape, but I just wanted them silver. I found a local company that does just as good a job, plus I didn't have to ship them. |
I'm going to check with ERA on coating prices before I have them sent. I have found it to be about $400 here for the whole exhaust system.

clayfoushee - To answer your question about was it worth saving $125, truthfully, I'm not sure. In my case, Dean saw my pipes and said he'd make them look a lot better than the original SPF black paint that was peeling. He mentioned the exhaust powder coat and showed me some samples and I said "what the heck, let's try it".
I guess I could have paid $250-$300 and shipped my pipes somewhere, but I thought I'd try something different. If for some reason, this stuff burns off in a couple years, then I'll look into getting cermaic coating. By the way, I purchased my SPF headers already silver cermaic coated and they still look great 2.5 years later. Scott, SPF#1230 |
I'm looking at my JET HOT quote for "Cobra System" for $540.00 which includes $40.00 shipping from Las Vegas. WHERE are you guys getting them done for $250.00? Is that side pipes also?

The title of this thread was about side pipes. The prices I quoted were about coating prices for those only. If you're having your headers done as well, it only stands to reason it will cost more. $540 for headers AND sidepipes, plus shipping is about right and very fair. The headers cost just as much to coat as the pipes. The only thing I don't like is the shipping. Shippers are not header or sidepipe friendly, and they look terrible with dents in them. |

If you're thinking about powder coating over already ceramic coated pipes, it's pretty much guaranteed not to last. They'd have to be blasted clean first to have a chance.....more money! |

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn the newest hi-temp powder coating processes. I understand the latest technology is far superior to the stuff from even a year ago. Me, I use Black BBQ paint. About $5 a can, easy to touch up.

the high temp powder I got has been out less than a year,prior to then lots or normal powder was called,,"Hi Temp" .
I still think about ceramic coating my headers for the heat rendering qualities,,but call me crazy,,I love the look of paint,faded,,burnt,rusty,whatever,perfect and shiney is boring,I wanna look real and used,,Tim |

I would simply call ERA before you do anything. I don't know how they coat their sidepipes, but would guess it is ceramic, knowing the quality of their product. Just don't jerk them off and do anything to them until you know what's on them. That's all I was trying to say. But, I would guess that they do have a mark-up over what you can do if you act as the "general contractor" yourself. That's only fair, they have to pay the bills too. |
Oh!!!! I don't have them yet!:cool: I was waiting to decide on the engine & heads before I order the exhaust. That is why I don't know how ERA's pipe come:cool: I suppose my questions would look pretty dumb if I had the pipes:LOL:
