Which are the best mufflers?
Hey All
Continuing my rebuild here and now that I have some pretty serious power coming out of the engine, the reduced secondaries and the 2" cores I have in the existing glasspacks just arent going to do so I have a guy welding up some pipes for me but I have to select a muffler. A couple questions: 1) Do any of you have experience with Howe Racing Mufflers. They make what I have heard is a great set of mufflers for power, but are pretty loud at 98 db. 2) What mufflers do you have and do you a) like their sound, and b) do they flow well for minimal power loss? Thanks so much for your help! John |
I like my NASCAR type auger inserts

They are not too loud and not too quiet and will likely never need to be replaced ..
|
Where do you get those inserts from?
How much quieter do they make your car? And lucky last question, do they come in different sizes? |
http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/ Baffles can be found here. Without the baffles my car was 107db@30' With the baffles I believe we were down to 88 or 89 db. The end caps on the tubes can also be removed and you'll pick up a few more db's if you think you're losing power.

You have some responses from some pretty darn fast company!
Any one know what Lucien at Phoenix exhaust was putting in his pipes when he was making them? I love the sound of his pipes. Rick |
No idea on Lucien although I have read about his mufflers in other forums. THanks for all the tips. I am really stuck on this one. I have heared the spiral baffles are good but dont muffle much at idle - possibly due to the decreased airflow.
My big concern is that by opening up my exhaust from 2" internal diameter to 3.5" I know I will increase sound just by doing that. But then by putting on a pair of racing mufflers - well it will create all kinds of problems then. I am in search of hp and I know that comes at a cost of sound if you are going to get it thru exhaust, but there has got to be a better middle ground than I am finding! ANy ideas or am I wrong about the spiral baffles? |
Not true about the sound at idle. Totally quiet. As a matter of fact, my wife doesn't like it when the baffles are in, says it's too quiet. You know you got a keeper for a wife when she thinks something is too quiet.

HotFingers-
I have been looking at those for some time b/c right now my car (with glass packs) is very loud at idle and I would like to quiet it down some so the neighbors stop complaining. %/ Are the baffles easily changed or are they welded in place? Also, I assume they are use instead of a standard galsspack? |
There is nothing in the pipe, but the baffle. If you look at the picture in the first post, you can see a tab on the right end. There is also one on the other end. You would drill 2 holes on the backside of the pipe to corresponde with these tabs. The tab has a nut on it, so a small allen head bolt holds the baffle in place. The baffles can also be made to any length and are generally 3 1/2 diameter, but can also be made to any diameter.

They are very quiet for sidepipes (at idle)
But when you put your foot into them they emit a nice throaty grumble.
Be aware that there is a tab at each end of the baffle, both of which need to be drilled for and mounted. I did only the easy to drill front tab at first and received a nice rattle at idle  for my laziness. I then removed them and took the time to mark and drill the rear hole. An angle head on a Dremel, with a shortened pilot bit helps here.. then you can drill the hole to full size from the outside after verifying the accurate center of your pilot hole. |
Hey John.......how is the engine doing ? Like the cam ?
If you get these baffles, let me know how you like them. |
Hey Kevin
How you doing? good to hear from you. Love the engine and the cam although I still dont have the carb adjusted right. I havent wanted to spend a lot of time or money on it till I got the pipes fixed. I dont remember if it was you who told me but you know that on the Lonestars the headers are 2" to the flange and the pipes that go from there are 1 7/8" - the mufflers themselves are 2" in diameter internally - at least that is the situation with mine. Dont know why they would do that but with the 428 running pretty strong now I am welding up some new pipes that are 2" from the flanges, 3.5" from the collectors and with some mufflers that are 3.5" internal.
What are you running for mufflers? What have you heard are the best? Are you going to get yoru cobra out soon? must be warming up in Nebraska before long! Hope all is well, John |
Has anyone tried the baffles in conjunction with these vortex insert cones?
http://www.secureperformanceorder.co...ore/vortex.cfm I wonder how much this would quiet things down at idle? |

I have read on other forums that Dynatech says they reduce sound by 1-3db and have almost no effect on back pressure. Since I have pretty much decided to do the howes I have thought I may put one or even two each side if need be. I have also seen these at the jegs site that look interesting: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...43&prmenbr=361 John |
Hey John,
If you really want to improve your exaust, Lonestar usually uses smaller diameter sidepipe tubes than the primary tubes. Make sure they are the same, should both be about 1 7/8" or 2" on a big block. Good luck, Tim |
To switch gears, what does anyone know about getting a somewhat *louder* sidepipe for a Superformance?? :)
|
Tim
Thanks - yeah that is an important little detail that most people dont know - I found out from another Lonestar owner that gained 6% at the rear wells when he re-did the pipes with 2" tubes and put some Howes on it. John |
John,
you have yours running before I do ! The carb should be a simple matter of tunning. Adjust the floats, idle mixture, high speed ect... Check the plugs, if your running rich, they'll be dark, lean, they will be white. Need any help, just email me. Right now, MSN is having major problems with email so, bear with me on responding. I also have the lone star pipes, don't like them & may build my own this winter. I just want to get my motor in a.s.a.p to enjoy it for a while. They are too small for big blks. with a lot of hp & torque, too restrictive. We need to expell the gasses fast & with ease. The glass packs are cheap also. I don't know anything, about sidepipes. I have never worked on them before so I don't know what's out there for mufflers. I would take the advice of what the guys are talking about on this thread. Sounds like they know what their talking about. Our spring weather has been great for cobras here. I'll get mine done just in time for the extream heat ! We've been very busy racing the sprint car & running the shop. Hopefully, I get to installing the cobra engine in the next two weeks. Let me know what pipes, size & mufflers you'll buy. Thanks, Kev |
I was wondering where the auger style come from the only place I could find the was from Speedway they are $14.95 for 11" long come in 3" or 3 1/2" and I belive in 4" has any one used them????

John, I tried to open your e-mail but, could not. Sorry....all my mail will have to wait. MSN is still having problems.
