To answer your question, yes it can be done. Will you use a Chevy transmission also? Here are the things you'll have to change:
- New engine mounts
- Build new headers
- Relocate Transmission mounts
- Relocate shifter hole on transmission tunnel. You'll have to deal with a hole in the carpet.
- different size drive shaft
- Radiator hoses

I'm a Chevy man also, but I have been assimilated. Three major reasons for using a ford engine are:
1. Less work, no modifications to make it fit
2. You can dress the engine to look original
3. Increases resale value

If these 3 reasons don't bother you than go ahead and use the Chevy engine.

I don't really care about original looks. my 57 does look stock from the outside, but thats only b/c I designed it to be a sleeper. I'm looking for a driver's car. it doesn't have to look a certain way, as long as it can perform. in fact, I'm probably going to use a momo steering wheel and pedals along with a modern performance shifter (not sure which yet) with a momo knob on it.
without a doubt I'll be changing the wheels to PS Engineering 17in with pireli P Zero Nero M+S tires wraped around them (275/40-17 f&r)

I tried to call spf just before this post, and it rang about 10 times. Their probably closed. (i'm not good with timezones and I'm still not sure where their offices are located.) I'll try towmarow.

Just for comparison's sake, what is the top notch ford engine builder that has expirience with cobras. In other words, if you had a budget of no more 12000 for an engine, and you were looking for a insanly robust, plenty powerful and extremly reliable engine, bb or sb. what builder would be the one to buy from.

I don't want to deny consideration of a ford if I don't know anything about them.

Call Keith Craft. He advertises on this site, and can probably give you the kind of performance you were saying you wanted for the money you say you can spend.
