We started early this morning (4am) and while I was waiting for the sun to come up I slipped over to this board to what's been happening lately. Just for giggles I typed in my name in your search engine....Wow, you guy's have been talking about me behind my back, I guess I should have subscribed to the threads and I'd be more up to date.
There’s been allot of discussions on Demon Carb types, models and sizes.
You Guy's all own very unique cars and you might as well throw the catalog recommendation chart out the window. It doesn’t address a 351 or Big Block FE engine in a 2600# car, with a 4.10 gear and a 4 speed. Carburetor selection for your applications can’t be done by looking at a chart designed for a 73 Camaro, 350, TH350, with a 350 gear……now isn’t that special…..
Before you spend your hard earned and well-taxed money on a Carb for your Cobra you should consult with someone that understands the relationships between the power generator and the chassis. Don’t rely on some kid at a mail order house to choose your fuel system, he’s probably never seen a Cobra, doesn’t understand anything about the ignition, cam, fuel and chassis relationship and will generally get you into trouble trying to tune your engine, he probably uses a Edeljunk 750 on his 68 Nova.
Professional advice on selecting the correct Carb of the 122 different Barry Grant Demons available is easy to get, you can call the factory and speak to Mike or Doug or you can call me personally and I’ll be happy to help you choose the right carb for your application and walk you through the final tuning process once you get it bolted on.
A couple of tips here:
Vacuum Secondary carbs, unless you’re running a 260 V8 with a 1200 stall convertor and 2.63 gear I doubt you need a VS carb.
As you increase cam duration you reduce low end cylinder pressure and you’ll require more initial timing to give this fine “Premium” pump gas a chance to expand before the piston crosses TDC and the fire goes out.
Carb sizing on these cars is not a standard formula, you need to consider the weight, gearing, convertor stall, driving habits and many other things to choose the correct size of carb for your combination.
When you’re tuning, remember, IGNITION 1st, then carburetion, you CANNOT tune the carb if the ignition is not set up correctly for the cam and engine specs.
Carb people are just that, Carb People, very few of them understand ignition and it’s relationship between the carburetor, cam, compression ratio, cylinder pressures, unleaded fuel characteristics, timing events and ignition output numbers. We specialize in two things here, Demon Carburetion and Ignition Systems and that’s about all we do. 80% or better of our projects are Mopar or Ford, we do very little with the Off Brand guy’s as they’re all way smarter than me and I just can’t stand to learn anymore tech info.
Gotta run I’ve got a cam and heads to bolt down to a 351W by 5:00 tonight.
