Power brake booster

I would like to add a power brake booster. It needs to a compact unit. Any suggestions on where to find one?

sirelesar 11-18-2004 01:58 PM

Hey Dave,
Try Master Power (MP) Brakes (888) 351-8781. They sell all the good stuff. It's not Baer or Wilwood, but it is good products, and they can help you size it. Make sure you are running 17-18" vacuum before you go down that path.

Dave,
I have heard of guys converting to power brakes using a Subaru power booster and master cylinder. They are powerful and compact.

I have a like new Master power Brakes 7 inch (the small one) booster that I will let go for 60 bucks. This is about the smallest you will find. The street rodders use them.It is cad plated. chuck

Power Booster

I recently converted to power brakes on my A&C. I used an '84 Vette booster and MC combo. The "84 has an integral proportioning valve eliminating the need for an inline valve.

System works really well.

Brake Lights

Dave,
Last sat. we were talking about our brake lights and you said yours were not working as they should. If not enough pressure was applied they wouldn't come on.

By any chance is your switch installed with the terminals on top ?

It turns out my brake light problem was/is the switch.New switch is due at my front door today before noon.:3DSMILE:

CowtownCobra 12-10-2004 08:32 AM

Fred,

Yes, terminals on top, is that wrong?

BTW, those side pipes look really nice sitting in my office:LOL:

" those side pipes look really nice sitting in my office"
I bet they do. I liked looking at them sitting on my living room too.:3DSMILE:

With the terminals on top there could easily be air trapped in the switch.
Try loosening the junction block an rotating it so that the terminal are facing down as much as possible.Tighten that back up and the loosen the switch and let it leak for a minute or so to let the air out.

trularin 12-10-2004 08:45 AM

Dave, do you have the newer body style?

I would like to know what you end up with. I would consider putting power brakes in my Lone Star.

When I first looked at it, I didn't think there was enough room.

I am very interested.

CowtownCobra 12-10-2004 09:07 AM

Fred, they will look (and sound) even better when I get them on the car! Very interesting about the switch, I'll give that try.

Trularin, I have the competition frame and the body was made in spring 2003. My fire wall might be different than yours, it and my pedal assembly are flat and vertical. I am in the middle of doing an engine swap and as part of that will be redoing the brakes. The power brake booster is a 7 inch MBM unit that is used a lot in street rods. Haven't got it in yet but I measured and it should fit (at least on my car). I drove an SPF a while back with power brakes and WOW what a difference. You really have to stand on mine to get them to work, and they do, but it scares me when my wife drives it (for several reasons! ).

I'll post pictures as I get farther along.

Tim Brewer 12-10-2004 09:10 AM

Dave, like Trularin is thinking, I don't think there is enough room in a Lonestar for a booster. At least not next to your other master cylinders. If you figure a way, please let us know.
Tim

trularin 12-10-2004 11:15 AM

Thanks Dave, I know what you mean about standing on it to stop.

If you get this put together, please PM at least Tim and I with PICs. If there is something we will need to fab, give us a hint.

Power on a Lone Star would be a great improvement.

Power Brake Booster

I upgraded my FFR to power brakes, once the body is mounted there is a clearence problem. Even a 7" booster will not fit with out modifying the frame. So I went the way of the Buick Grand National electric booster. All the necessary parts and a discription with pictures can be found at

http://www.ffcobra.com/FAQ/brakes_gn.html
PS autozone was half the price of NAPA

CowtownCobra 12-10-2004 06:00 PM

Jaybar, you could be right. I just went out and took another look at it. The booster I got from Chuck (ENTDOC) will fit, there's enough clearance around it, but the master cylinder won't, it will hit the wheel well.

Electric it may be... How did you power it? Did it require a relay, or will a fuse be enough? Do you remember how much current it drew? Thanks for the info!

Well, it turns out the first booster, the MBM unit I got from Chuck fit very nicely. No rework to the pedals, just had to cut a new hole in the firewall. Have the engine out so had plently of room to work.
