My new Tremmec Shifter lever
I really began to dislike the feel of the vintage style shift lever. (The backwards Fairlane lever...?)
The action was so slow and cumbersome. I've seen other cars with stubby little shifters so I decided to make one to try out. I love it! This little stubby lever has a very quick feel to it....more like a sports car instead of a school bus. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...99Mvc-004s.jpg But now I really have to reach back to grab it...which is also cumbersome....but maybe I just need to get used to it. I'm going to try it for a while. I'm headed out to the SPF "Spring Snake Round-up" in Branson, MO this weekend so I expect it to get a lot of shifts. -Rob |

I bought the Jordan shifter (similar design) from the SCOF web pages. Worth every penny, and when combined with the Pro 5.0 billet shifter mechanism, I never miss a 2-3 shift. Feels so much better than the stocker, especially if you have long gorilla arms like me. :D -Dean #747 |

I was thinking the same as Don. Of course, you'd have to come up with something for the original shifter hole. Where did you get your stubby shifter bar? I've got the mid shifter location on my TKO and was thinking of one like yours. |

Dean, after I read your note, I checked out the Pro-5.0 unit....very nice!! Does your lever have any bends in it..? I think mine would be better if it were bent forward. Don, I didn't know that the shifter could be moved....? the only part of the gear box that I've seen is the bottom while changing the motor oil....or what I could see through the hole in the tunnel when I took the shift lever off. There is no linkage....hmmm....I'll have to take a look at it again. It doesn't seem to make any sense to me.....? Honestly, I don't know what I'm doing, I'm not even sure which tremmec I have...it's a 5-spd. hp...I made the stubby lever my self...I own a machine shop. I had some sort of stainless rod on the scrap shelf. Not sure what it was exactly...hope it wasn't something exotic and expensive (hee hee) . I bought the knob at the local auto parts store. This one is a Mr Gasket product. very cheap...but good enough for a trial. -Rob |
I GOT THE JORDAN SHIFTER WITH MY SPF AND ITS GREAT. MY HAND RESTS RIGHT THERE AND IT MAKES THE SHIFT FROM 2ND TO 3RD VERY EASY . WORTH EVERY PENNY .

The Jordan Shift Lever is definitely the way to go. It looks similar to your shorty , except that it is bent forward just the right amount. The Pro 5 shifter is also a big improvement over the 3550 stock shifter. FWIW, the shifter that comes on the 600 is made by Hurst and even better than the Pro 5.

Do yourself a favor and move to the mid shift location so that you don't have to reach back to shift. It is also a more positive feel because you will be eliminating the rod, and the associated flex, that connects rear shift to mid shift.

modified Hurst shift stick
I also got rid of the original look stick and fabricated this one with a hurst steel stick, cut the bottom flat part off, rotated it in such a way that the stick now faces forward and to the left. With the massive shifter ball the shifting feels solid and with a short throw.

1st things 1st......whats up with that shop? It's way too organized with the parts bins...good lighting....soft protectors on the car. Wheres's the cluttered workbench with lawnmower parts buried under the broken washing machine motor next to that thingy that you bought at the neighbors garage sale....:3DSMILE: :LOL: 2nd.....beautiful car!!! 3rd.....thank you for the pic...I had no idea that my tranny looked like that. That photo is from the car being built at ERA in New Britain. I was back on a visit and was fortunate enought to be there while they were putting it together. The most impressive part was to watch them pick up the engine on the hoist and and hour and a half later have the engine, transmission and drive shaft completely bolted in and ready to move on to something else. Doug (in the photo) and Ritchie have this down to a science. DonC |

OK...the jury is out. My straight shifter bites! I'm back from a 1600mile round trip with 2 days of twisty-road cruises. I love the short throw but the postion is too far back such that my right elbow kept hitting the co-pilot. There were several other cars that had the Jordan lever and I had a chance to take a close look at it. It is a much better way to go! So, my next iteration will be in the direction of duplicating the Jordan.

For those with a T-5 wanting a more conventional shifter location, here's a midhsifter one of the Factory Five guys made up.
