High Level Rear Brakelight

Here in NZ my Cobra needs to have a high level rear brake light for compliance. Does any one (guys from Oz maybe) have any neat looking solutions to this?

Will they let you mount it on the rollbar?

strictlyp: It has to sit on the longitudinal centreline, my car has a single hoop design. If it was the double width type of rollbar then mounting the light to it would be a good solution.

Is it going to have to stay all the time or just get it through inspection? I guess either was you could make a small bracket that mounted to the center of the bulkhead behind the seats and stuck up enough to just be above the rear cockpit edge making it visible from the back but not sticking out like a ruby in a goats a**.

Hey Myles what about a nice low profile LED type that they use on the Hot Rod roadsters. I've seen them colour coded to the body and you'd barely notice them, till they're on.

rblong: One of my options was pretty much as you describe, just bracketing it on to the rear bulk head and taking it off after certification.

mickmate: The choice seems very limited, they have to have the right magic numbers stamped so it can't be any old red light (that would be too simple!). The one I have is quite low profile, about an inch high by 10" wide. It is the type that is meant to be built into a rear spoiler.

I wanted to keep the body shape unchanged so I thought I might try and make it look like an accessory, but one that was added in the 60's rather than now. So a sort of period look about it. I found a place in town that sells oval section stainless tube and I thought I might mill a slot in it, mount the light inside and weld the whole thing to the inner leg of the single hoop roll bar. That is one extreme whereas the simple bolt it on just for compliance (and for warrant checks I guess) is the other. Not sure which way to go yet...

A lot of us over the Tasmain are usin the Hella 5242 Universal External Mount High Level Brake Lamp. This is a die cast metal housing designed to bolt to your boot lid or on the rear deck in the center behind the seats. It's a neat low profile design and doesn't look to obtrusive when painted to match the car.

I have a hella stoplight. From looking at the first link in Mikes reply its the same one. I think they fit in nicely with the lines of the cobra, its sort of a similar shape to the bonnet/hood scoop only smaller. I have seen them mounted on all sorts of replicas including vintage Ferarri's. I think mounting them on the boot is a little too low, I have mounted it on the area between the boot and the seats. This would be my recommendation, and I would leave it there permanently (otherwise you'll have some screw holes in the body, yuk!!!). It could save your cars ar$e, Literally!!!!
