rblong: One of my options was pretty much as you describe, just bracketing it on to the rear bulk head and taking it off after certification.
mickmate: The choice seems very limited, they have to have the right magic numbers stamped so it can't be any old red light (that would be too simple!). The one I have is quite low profile, about an inch high by 10" wide. It is the type that is meant to be built into a rear spoiler.
I wanted to keep the body shape unchanged so I thought I might try and make it look like an accessory, but one that was added in the 60's rather than now. So a sort of period look about it. I found a place in town that sells oval section stainless tube and I thought I might mill a slot in it, mount the light inside and weld the whole thing to the inner leg of the single hoop roll bar. That is one extreme whereas the simple bolt it on just for compliance (and for warrant checks I guess) is the other. Not sure which way to go yet...
