Default MSD Phasing?

I was just reading in this forum about MSD Phasing on ready to run pro billet dist. (which i have)

what exactly is that?....what does it do to motor? how do you fix it?...i believe its the wires in the distributer...if you reverse them is that just switching the wires on the coil?

I have a bad problem with my car running very rich, and under load it would cut out a bit...felt like it was dumping to much gas into it...I have to make sure thats correct before i try to fix the carb ....

after all this im ready to go back to points....

I did a search on phasing and got nothing.
Distributor phasing is the relative position of the reluctor pickup/tigger signal to the postion of the rotor relative to the dist. cap rotor post when the fire pulse comes from the msd box. In the old days sometimes the coil pulse comes when the rotor is midway beween posts and you might get fire to two posts. Phasing is a 60's prob and I would'nt expect on a MDS dist. The symtoms would be lying down at hight revs or a misfire. If your car is clean at high revs, don't worry.
The fix used to be renotching the distr. cap to rotate it more closely to the right post when the coil pulse fired.

Phasing with regard to the MSD box and distributor has to do with the correct alignment of the reluctor to the field coil, and the rotor tip to the terminals inside the distributor cap, at the moment the spark is created. The 2 primary wires that go between the MSD box and the distributor (electronic type) when connected correctly will show the timing retarded, compared to when the wires are incorrectly connected.

but it wasnt....it misfire bad under hard acceleration...and from my wife was telling me was the pipes were pouring black smoke once i punched it...

there wasnt a fuel pump reg on it before and im suspecting PO tried to tune that carb to counter act the carb getting too much fuel.....

tried to adjust the idle mix to lean it out and the carb didnt do anything,,....no change even through i closed off the idle mix screws all the way in....i just got the tunning manual for the edelbrock carb (750) so im going to try to get that working....but id feel better knowing if my distrib worked the way its supposed to...
