Trying to change a pulley on my alternator...which way does the big nut turn...normal, or reverse????????

Rick Parker 08-07-2005 07:52 PM

EarlsflyinCobra 08-07-2005 08:07 PM

Thanks Rick....I'll retackle it in the AM...just wanted to make sure I was going the right way...thats one "TOUGH" bugger.....

Tom Kirkham 08-07-2005 08:42 PM

Use an impact. It will spin right off.

sounds like you might be removing an underdrive pulley?? i had problems with one.. get rid of them!!!

lovehamr 08-08-2005 05:48 AM

Tom's right, about the only way to take one off with out damaging anything is with an impact gun. Just as a side note; it's the only way that I've found to put one back on as well. Keep in mind that there aren't any "splines" or anything like that to hold it in place while you tighten the nut so you have nothing to hold on to without sticking something into the alternator which goes right back to the "damaging" thing. You may have one that will take a hex key in the shaft end (to hold it still) but I've never had any luck with those. Good luck.

Tighten it as much as you can. Install the alt and put the belt on tight. put the car in gear. Now tighten the rest of the way.
