Default building a 428 - need help!

Gentlemen:
I have acquired a 1966-67 428 police interceptor block, I-beam rods and crank. The engine will go into a cobra. I am told it is a solid lifter block and I want to run a hydrolic lifter cam. My budget is about $8000. I need suggestions on all areas of the build and parts necessary. Thanks for the assistance in advance
Coach Mike

you can find parts at Jegs or Summit racing, info on building the engine will have to come from a pro, I suggest you contact one of the engine builders, i.e. The Engine Factory, Southern Motors, Keith Craft and so forth, they maybe able to rebuild the engine for you cheaper than you can do it your self, it will be put togather right

Have you built a motor before?
Look at the back of the block. There's a large frost plug covering the back of the cam tunnel. Above the cam, are there 3 holes with pipe plugs or small frost plugs, one on top, one at 10:00 & one at 2:00? If you have the holes plugged at 10:00 & 2:00, you can probably run a hydraulic cam. I was wrong once before, but to my knowledge all 428s were drilled for hydraulic lifters.

I think Dan is right, the 428s were drilled for Hydraulic. Check to make sure the galleys are drilled.

Are you doing this as a project or are you just trying to get an engine into your cobra?

I mean, there is much to be said about building an engine and having an engine built. If you have the parts you say, you may not need much more than a good machine shop and a summit racing catalogue.

Please keep us informed as you venture forward, we would like to hear what you do and what item us used.

I know one CC member doing the same thing right now.

Thanks for the info. I know Keith Craft personally and will get in touch with him. The engine block and components are in route. When I get it I will ck it out. Once this is completed I will contact Keith for his input.
Thanks, Coach Mike
