Engine swap,from 4.6L to 5.0L???
I have access to a number of hurricane flooded cars,some still run/drive as they only had few inches of water in them, others were completely under........
Here's the deal: I will be bidding on some late model (from 1995 to 2001) Mustang Cobra SVT cars........I plan to make one into a road race car as I did with my 65 Coupe.........The best of the lot right now is a 01 model Mustang Cobra SVT, theft recovery (not a flood car), only the engine and trans were stolen out of the car, it has no body damage and everything else looks good, price may be reallllllll right, goes up for bids next thursday.............. I don't know squat about the modular motors and not interested in learning either right now, but I do jave a good supply of 5.0L blocks/heads and other parts......... I know the 5.0L motor will fit the later model Mustangs, but what will it take to put a 5.0L where a 4.6L modular motor was?????????? Are the K memebers the same or not???, either I will use a Tremec or possibly even a close ratio toploader.........I know they make the trans crossmember for the toploader, but not sure about the neeeded parts for the 5.0L swap......Could it be as easy as swapping out the motor mounts for the 5.0L motor mounts????? Any help would be greatly appreciated or if you know of any other site that could provide parts/info, that would help.......... Thanks; David |
I'm pretty sure the bell housing bolt pattern is different. The computer is going to want to see all the inputs and outputs that it expects, and will be tuned for the 4.6. If it is a digital dash, going to the 5.0 computer may not be an easy option.
Anything can be done, but I would think the 4.6 would be much simpler to do. In many ways the 4.6 is a better engine than a 5.0. |
Olddog;
Thanks for the reply.....not worried about the electronics or any of that stuff.......it will be a road race car with no interior and have a 5.0L stroker (331 cu in) with a carb on it, so all the electronics will be removed as well as the interior............ Basically I'm trying to get the theft recovery car or a hurricane flooded car mainly for the body/suspension.........The Mustang Cobra SVT came with the "big brakes" as well as some other "go fast" stuff....the suspension is better than the standard GT suspension, that's why I'm trying to get the Mustang Cobra......from 96 on thay came with the 4.6L modular motor............this past thursday I missed a hell of a deal on a 95 Mustang Cobra SVT with the 5.0L........There seems to be enough 96 to early 2000's models that you can almost pick and choose which one/ones to bid on.......... The auctions have been selling the flood cars at a rate of about 2,500 a week here and still have about another 2 to 3 months supply to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS; Whatever car I do end up with, someone will be able to get the interior,dash,seats,gas tank,electronic,etc.,etc., for a good price as I will not be using any of it............ David |
Sounds like you can do it then.
I remember one of the AC cobra replica car manufacturer making a big deal out of how it would be impossible to put a 4.6 in one. One of the things he was wining about was the motor mount differances. Seeing how FFR is sell the kits that he claimed was impossible, I don't know if he was accurate about the mounts. However if you look at FFR web site, you can likely figure out if the mounts are different. |
I know that a number of the tube crossmember suppliers provide an option for either 5.0 or 4.6 into Fox chassis. Ford moved the engine fwd an inch when they went to the SN95s where you could move the eng back atleast an inch in the fox so I would look at moving it as far back as possible. I would think your worse case would be finding a 94/95 crossmember or tube crossmember. I would think seriously about using a 351W instead of a 302 for reliability, they are less likely to split down the middle at stock hp. For space if a 4 cam 4.6 will fit a 302/351/460 will fit.

Dave,
I would ask those questions here http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...splay.php?f=25 RD See you soon at SAAC |
The first two years of SN95 were 5.0 powered cars, so you can probably just use the pan, mounts, etc for that year of car.

hssss; I know it will physically fit,just not sure if the K memebers are the same or similar......I do have a supply of early 351-W blocks as well as early 302 blocks to build on....I have one of each in my 2 65's and am very pleased with the 331 stroker....Intakes and road race oil pans of other related items are a little easier to find and more plentiful for the 302 rather than the 351-W.....I'm not totally sure which engine combo I would use, but leaning towards the 331 vs. the 351........
RD; thanks, I'll check them out, went to another SVT site yesterday and joined up,but for some reason I can not post there yet........ Sal;I was hoping to get a 95 model, but there are not many out there, there is a ton of 96 to early 2000 model cars though......One person told me he thought all I would have to do would be change out the motor mounts from the 4.6L to the 5.0L, I could only hope it would be this simple......I have seen the trans. crossmembers out there for just about any trans imaginable including the toploader..... If all I need are the 5.0L motor mounts, this would be a very easy swap/build, just need to confirm it.......I also found a totaled out 95 Mustang Cobra that the salvage yard told me I could have pretty much any parts I needed relatively cheap, such as the motor mounts, alternator and power steering brackets and odd parts like that...... Thanks to all for the replys..... David |
Just did some more research into the K-members and this is what I found.........
1995 model;K-member Ford part # F4ZZ 5025A 1996 thru 2003 Ford part # 2R32 5025 BA Very similar part #'s...... May only need a simple motor mount swap for the engine swap........ David |

http://www.erareplicas.com/427/engpro.htm While poking around I found this thought it might be of interest. I was talking with a friend who is a licensed auto rebuilder who told me he had the running gear out of a late Lightning for sale. |
