Well, I replaced the fuel pump, and did a little post mortum on the old one...it was TOAST!!! No gunk, just a catastrophic failure. The shaft was totally cockeyed, and wedged off to the side. No gunk to be seen anywhere. I may just send it to Holley for an explaination.
I took a nice little ride round the hood, and guess what.....NOW THE FREAKING FAN REFUSES TO TURN ON. And the horn, which has always been a little sickly and intermittant....IT'S DEAD TOO. AM I CURSED?!!? I can't believe this. Early tomorrow I'm supposed to get this thing aligned, and now the whole darned car has decided to take a swim around the CRAPPER!! Do I sound a little exasperated? Well, its 12:30 am, and I've got to get up early if I'm going to have any chance hotwiring the blasted fan so I can at least get this thing to go where it's pointed....at least if it ever becomes reliable enough to take anywhere, that is. Good #%$@& Night!!! |

Ron, I have became convinced over the years that exasperation is a factor that is built in to these cars. And many that I have bought new from dealers. Work on one problem until you get it solved and really feel good for a day at most and at least one other small thing will show up. I haven't had the fan problem yet, but I did run a separate lead through a toggle switch so I can manually turn it on and off just in case the thermostat ever fails. Now that I have been fool enough to say this, watch it stop working within the next week. :LOL: Ron **) |

You're right about the exasperation thing. I've been up and doing some testing. I do know the fan works, and the switch works (Mine is manual), so next to test is the ignition switch...which I've already been suspecious of. BTW Anybody know if there is a fuse or solinoid somewhere? I think my car has the Painless(ful) wiring setup. I will get through this, it's just the timing that ticks me off:). Thanks again, Ron. |

Wanna guess the common circuit between the fan and the horn? Drum roll..................the FUSE. Doh!! Off to Kragens as soon as they open. |

I have nothing but contempt for Holley pumps, electric and mechanical. Have seen two mech pumps self destruct, with one lunching the cam lever pivot pin assembly into an engine. Running a Carter mech in my Kirkham for 5 years without a hitch. As for electrics, the Holley blue pump I originally ran in my car functioned ok, but sounded like a blender full of rocks. I finally chucked it and installed a Mallory unit and couldn't be happier. Reliable and much quieter. Love their carbs, but that's as far as it goes.

I changed to the carter, much less noise and no regulator needed, the only thing I don't like is when I turn on the pump, it runs at 10 PSI for a few minutes and settles down to 7 PSI ?. Anyone know why?.

I forget which pump it is but one of them has a minor adjustment right on the electric pump that you can tweak. It is basically set at about 7 pounds I think and you can lower or raise it about 1 pound I believe the papers said. I knew a guy that told me he had one but just can't remember which brand it was. I have had good luck with the Holly Blue Pump as it has been on my car for about 6 years now. But after reading all of this I guess I had better buy a new one. I do use a regulator and set it at about 7/8 pounds. Ron |
The saga continues.
The new fuel pump is quit a bit quieter than the previous, and so all seems well on the fuel side of things. As I mentioned, the fan and horn have also decided to act up...turned out to be a blown fuse...and a blown fuse...and a blown fuse. All three in just 24 hours. One incident directly coincided with me pushing the horn button, but the others seem random. I bought 2 boxes of the fuses, so I'm good to go for at least 2 more days at this rate! I know, I need to figure out why the fuse keeps blowing, but I need a break for today. I think I'll disconnect the horn circuit, since the horns dont seem to be working anyhow. Then I'll see how long the fuse lasts. Funny how I made it 150 miles without losing one fuse, then a three go within 30 miles. BTW, the fuel pump seems to be on a different circuit, so faulty wiring by me is less likely :). BTW #2, The alignment made a HUGE difference, but there is not enough range on the rear upper A arms to dial in any negative camber. Per the tech doing the alignment, the CNC suspension components on my car KMP357 are significantly different (beefier, and much more difficult to adjust) from what he remembers KMP318 being. Maurice, I'll have to take a look to confirm. Anyone else heard of this? Thats it for now. |

I put a relay in my fan circuit and then fused the leads from the relay to the fan. Have never had a problem with it. One person here did burn the contacts out in his steering wheel after two years because he never had a relay and all the horn juice was going right through those contacts and they were cheap ones to start with. We managed to build them back and avoid replacing the whole interior of the wheel, ( A very hard job the way his was made ), and then put in a relay. He has never had a problem since that I have heard of. Ron |
I have relays turn on most of the stuff in my car. It is how a car is made now days and it makes much more sense than the old switch and go system.
I fuse the incoming block and each circuit leaving the block. Seems like a lot, but I can isolate a circuit and fix it without the other circuits falling out. Just my $0.02 |

Sounds like a relay problem I had with #318. I replaced the relay with a new one early on and that part of the problem was solved. I later replaced the fuse box after the contacts for the fan or horn fuse got overheated and wouldn`t hold the fuse tight.
