shaft rocker adjustment

How do I adjust the valvetrain geometrie with a rocker shaft setup like this:



Several shims came with the setup for placing under the pedestals. However the wear pattern on the valve stem tip is always in about the same location slightly towards the engine, no matter how many shims I use.

I'm using a hydraulic camshaft, should I do the valvetrain adjustment with a solid lifter set to zero lash, or do the hydraulic lifters have no effect?
