Ring & Pinion Install/Swap

Hi experts,

I have done some searching but didn't find any good info. One thread looks like it had the answer but the links to other sites were no longer active.

Here goes.... I am thinking about changing my rear end gears (ford 8.8)
I am somewhat familiar with the process but concerned with the alignment- don't want a rear that wines or burns up!

Ring gear is easy I think just bold it on.

Do you change the bearing on the pinion?

There is only one way to shim the pinion correct ---in and out?

How do you check alignment and backlash? How much?

Is it worth just having someone do it or should I forge ahead and try something new?
