Default K&n

I just ordered a K&N Etreme air filter, it has extra filter area on the top as well and looks like it will be really breathable! With the scoop letting fresh air in right at the top of the filter, it should work well. I see alot of guys using them in the " Kit Car" mag. anyone using one and have some feedback on it.

Thanks!

It's been out a while, wasn't impressed so I made a top. 180 micron stainless steel mesh.

I'm thinking of going the same route. Feedback would be great to hear?

Be sure you get the right size! As I did not! The 14" diameter is too big and hits my distributor. I imagine it all depends on your setup though. There is an 11" that should fit fine for me. I suppose I should have measured before hand!

Smile Etreme air filter

Coach Mike installed one on his 408 KC. It spuddered when he got on it. Removed the top filter, installed metal top cover and his Cobra ran like a scalded dog.
So we have one hanging on the shop wall for sale. My guess is that it disrupts the air flow into the carb.

Drop base 14" should fit whatever you have. Even with a big top MSD disti.

Well, mine's not the 14", but works fine for me... At least I don't have to worry about it loosening up, spinning around, & damaging my paint again. (yea, it happened with the oval air cleaner- which I only put on at shows now)

Take a look in my photos. It fit fine on my 427. More importantly, there is a chassis dyno plot of the engine with and without the K&N filter. The old filter cut 15 or 20 HP from the run. The K&N cut 1 HP. Some difference.

The only way it would make the motor sputter is if the carb was jetted wrong or they didn't re tune it for the additional air flow.

When I needed an air cleaner for my car I called K&N and they were pleased to make me a custom sized air filter for surprisingly less money than I thought it was going to cost.

What happens if you get caught in the rain with the open top filter and the hood scoop?

Better fuel mileage and you get soaked!

There is no effect at all.

I don't know why mine did'nt make it, but it was definately hitting the Dist. No biggie, I ordered the 11" & that will be cool. I sure hope I don't go through any surging! I went through hell with my Vett with different filters that were supposed to work great on everyone's car, but mine pinged up a storm. Too much turbulant air at the mass air sensor I suspected. Did find the right combo finally! I figured with a carb, should be fine, even with a little ram air effect. We'll see.

if i remember right some of the guys doing emc don't like the filtered top, disrupts air flow and kills hp, then i remember reading an article somewhere where it added hp., who knows.

I recall a dyno test where they reported the filtered top cost them H.P. They tested several air filters (different sizes...all K&N) and I was surprised that the best (H.P. wise) was one of the smaller (Dia.) filters. Of course a stationary dyno vs. a moving cobra with a hood scoope... who knows. On the other hand I will walk into a room and can't remember why I came in there. So maybe we shouldn't trust my memory!

FYI the Extreme Package from K&N comes in 3 base styles. One is flat, one is a mild drop base, and the other is a deeper drop base. You could have used any under the hood of the Backdraft depending on what you needed.

You may also have been able to add a spacer under the carb, which is always a benefit as well.

Dropping down from a 14" to an 11" is going to negate any possible benefit of going to the filter top due to the decrease in diameter or really the circumference.
