Help! My cobra shuts itself off?
Looking for help and advice in tracking down this intermittent problem:
Driving along at highway speeds, anywhere from 30 to 45 mph. Not during acceleration but cruising. Engine shuts off. Here are some clues: - Rebuilt 1968 302 engine is always warm and up to temperature - there is no sputtering or hesitation - does not happen at idle - does not happen when I accelerate - does not happen every time - running electronic distributor with ford parts I am apt to believe I have an electrical problem, since the engine never stutters, hesitates or misfires. But if I am wrong someone tell me. If anyone has input where I might start to track down this annoying problem I would appreciate all advice. |
Fuel injected or carbed? What ignition are you running? I know it's Ford, but what is it?
|
without more troubleshooting info its hard to make a call. but the first thing are the basics , fuel, spark, then output of the alternator, bad wire from ignition, msd? duraspark? loose coil wire?
|
Does it start right back up or does it have to sit for a while?

Pull to the side of the road, put it in park, starts right up.

Could it be vapor Lock?

Replace the Module inside the distributor, and the "BOX". Heat is causing open circuit.

I stand corrected JWD. I think Rick is on the right path. Is that the famous Ford "Thick film module"?

crack in the coil allowed the oil to get out.
Coil gets hot, engine quits, Change coil E |
Yeah, check the coil. Get your DMM and test the voltage on the - and + poles. Jump in and drive around until it dies. Verify that it won't start right up, test the output on the coil again. I'll bet you on either the + or - poles you get the wrong voltage.
Make sure if you have an oil filled coil it is standing upright in it's mount, not laying on it's side. DD |
Heat issues require a cooling off period that this situation doesn't appear to need. I'm still betting on a bad switch or a loose connection. Been there, done that. If it starts right back up, it's not a heat issue.

Jerry I am not a big guy and on occasion my knee has slightly rubbed the ignition switch and shut the car down. Sounds simple just something to consider.

Thank you all for replying. I am going to start eliminating all the possibilites mentioned one by one until I find the problem. Love this forum.

Had a similar issue with a MSD Distributor. It turned out to be the magnet in the distributor was cracked thus interupting the "field".
