Looks like the Taurus fan/shroud combo is the way to go (if it fits) and not replace the Zirgo fan with a Spal. (half the price!) But, will the Flex-a-Lite Variable Speed Control work with the Taurus fan. I was thinking of hooking it up on the High Speed side and use the Flex Variable Speed Control. Don't want to pull and rewire everything again. The Variable Speed Control worked well before the Zirgo fan took a dump.

You need to call Flexalite tech and find out what amp rating that controller supports. With the Taurus or MK8 fans you'll need 40 to 45 amps continuous. I would be surprised if the flexalite unit will handle it. ..worth a call though. |
Taurus 2-speed Fan Replacement Motors
Thought those of you using the Taurus or T-Bird fans would be happy to hear you can buy replacement motors if your high mileage unit fails or one speed goes out. see the link below at proliance.com. Hi everyone
Thought I would update all on my taurus fan install. I bought a 97 fan and a DC Controls variable speed controller and have them both in now. Controller is nice as far as ramps fan up gently so no huge amp draw but fan doesn't seem to pull as hard as I thought it would. I am finding strange results. My electronic thermometer that is mounted right beside the thermostat housing ( 180F Mr Gasket High flow thermostat) is reading @ 210F at 84F ambient but coolant in side to rad with digital temp gun shows 180F and rad out shows 130-140F. When I shoot stock mechanical water pump bypass and pump it shows 190-220 jumpy. Why am I getting such different readings ? I am 98% sure I have all air out. Could it be my water pump isn't circulating right ? Any thoughts ? Thank You Brent PS any of you with taurus fan had it on in running car ? is it loud and really moving air or is it hard to tell over exhaust noise ? |
I have now run my car two days in a row with this new fan in 95*F Houston heat and high humidity and it solved the problem completely. Previously the temps would slowly climb to 210-220 at idle, making it quite unnerving to negotiate traffic. Now I can idle in the driveway for 30 minutes and it sits right at 190-195F with the fan on low speed. When I flip it on high, it drops about 5*. The massive airflow cfm coupled with the large shroud is in my opinion why it works so well.
I am using Dave's (The Hollister Road) harness from earlier in this thread, with the low speed circuit wired to a 185*F electric temp switch inline between my expansion tank and radiator inlet, and the high speed is presently routed to a dash toggle. I will likely add another inline temp switch to make the high speed automatic, but keeping the dash switch just in case. FYI, his relay assembly is 1st class, industrial strength and wired specifically for this fan/application. Directions to install are very straight-forward. I HIGHLY recommend this fan for anyone wanting to forever remove any overheating concerns. I need to engineer permanent mounts this weekend and then I'll post up pics. |

Hi Matt,
It is secured in place by the four existing Hurricane radiator bolts using 4 small aluminum retaining tabs I made from 3/16"x1"x1" strap. I have been contemplating my permanent mounting options, but as hot as its been here in Houston, I haven't really been in a hurry. I will probably work out a final mounting system in the next couple weeks and will post pics then. Thanks. |

Attachment 15564 Here is how I installed my huge 1997 thunderbird fan into my classic roadster II 428 big block with no heating problems ever. heating up is not even an issue. If you notice closely, I had to cut one of the webbing to fit the rack and pinion properly. Hope this helps someone out. |
Hot weather update:
The Taurus fan setup did everything I'd hoped it would do. Hot weather, a hard run and a prolonged idle yields steady 185deg coolant temps now. That happens all on the fan's low speed too. The fan never has to go to Hi either, even though I have it wired to a secondary 195 deg sending unit I mounted in the bottom of my expansion tank. This is the best coolant system mod that I've done to date. Hollister's wiring harness is champs too. No more worries on frying my $$$ 482 KC aluminum Pond motor either.:3DSMILE: Dave |

I just got through installing my new Taurus Fan on my Hurricane. I used the Dave Hollister harness and a two speed manual switch for more personal control of operating temps. I was surprised how well the fan fit, and even more surprised how much air it moves as compared to the original equipment that came with the car. The only problem right now is the outside temp. is in the 40's and 50's, so I won't be able to determine how effective the fan is until we get back into the 1oo+ range here in the desert. Hopefully this thing will keep me from going over 210 degrees in the summer traffic. %/ Bill |
A great source for the fan/shroud is www.rockauto.com
search by P/N or look under 1997 Cougar XR7. It's part number is listed as RF24 or F4SH8C607AA if you want the parts with the Motorcraft sticker on it for about $265. Or you can get the Dorman part# 620118 which is the OEM part without the Motorcraft label on it for about $72 I have the Hollister wiring harness for 2 speed plus A/C and it words great. Got the low hooked up to 185 sensor in the intake and the hi speed is triggered by the A/C or manual switch on the dash. |
Ok, so I bought the fan and the Hollister wiring harness and am ready to cool down my Cobra. My question is has anyone installed the Mark 8 fan in an ERA? I haven't dug into it in earnest yet, but it looks like it's going to be very tight in relation to the upper A arm shafts and the sway bar. If anyone has, tips, tricks, issues, etc. specific to an ERA, it would be greatly appreciated.
