Jag Rear End Service Manual

Well, my kit is finally on order (actually it's been on order for a while now but I'm a patient guy  ) so I'm working on all the other necessary stuff while I wait. The engine is nearly done so I'm moving on to the rear end. I have a complete rear end out of a '74 XJ6 that I'm preparing to rebuild. I've done some work on Dana 44's before but I've never rebuilt a jag rear end. I'd like to find a good service manual.

I've searched the web and found 2 service manuals that I'm considering but I don't want them if they don't do a good job of covering the rear end ( I sound like my wife when she's shopping for a swim suit). The first one is titled, "The Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 Workshop Manual." It runs a steep $105 on Amazon. The second one goes for about $50 and is simply listed as the XJ6 Series 2 Manual (E188/4). The second one claims that it is an "official manual - not a condensed manual you find in most bookshops and accessory shops - it is an actual factory manual with infinitely more detail and guidance than you will find in any other publication."

Does anyone have any experience with either of these manuals or a recommendations for other manuals that adequately cover the rear end rebuild?

I'll check out the local garage, they have some Jag manuals I need to look at anyway. If you want a scanned page or two as a sample or otherwise we'll set something up.

I've had good luck with Concourse West for Jag parts, etc. They sent me some very detailed pages on how to setup the hub carriers. I would bet that the book that they came from would have all of the info that you are looking for.

I have been checking out Chilton, Mitchell and liked the Alldata best for clear concise info. I have scanned a few pages of stuff I was into on the hubs and was pleasantly surprised at the simple tools required. I can e-mail anyone interested what I have as I don't think graphics are readable at the moment when posted. I'd be interested in your comparison from the Dana 44 as someone told me the guts are interchangeable with Jag.

maybe it's working!

Nick,

I'd appreciate it if you'd email me what you have (cj428cj@cs.com). I didn't have any luck downloading what you attached to your post. You're right about the Jag rear end and the Dana 44. The jag center section is a dana 44 unit.

I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday and I picked up a Haynes Jaguar repair manual. It covers the rearend rebuild reasonably well (at least it covers it much better than I expected it to for an $18 book). In fact it looks alot like the Concourse West instruction sheet that they send with their rebuild kit although I haven't done a side by side comparison yet.

Nick, me too!

Nick,
Would appreciate it if you would e-mail me the stuff too. Only thing I haven't gotten into yet has been the rear.
How much disassembly is needed to change the U joint in the half shaft?
Thanks in advance

Jim,

Please post whatever you find out about changing the half shaft u-joints.

Thanks,

Rich,
Will do..... have to get my courage up first:rolleyes: ..... and then there is the possibility of something going wrong:CRY: ,,,,, that would kill the rest of the summer driving season:mad: ...... maybe I'll wait till late fall to get into this:3DSMILE:
Just have a wee tiny bit of clunk coming from the rear, so am not too worried about loosing it. Suspect the U joints.
If you happen to get into this before I do, let me know what I'm in for OK?
Take care

Lets see if this attachment works. I'd take the axle out of the spindle in the car then remove the axle to service u-joints. To service the hub if you don't have a suitable puller take the hub and spindle out as a unit and press it apart in a regular frame press.
Do not be afraid, may the force be with you!

I'm getting sick of replying to myself, if this doesn't work I'll e-mail it to you again.

Rich if you get me your e-mail I'll send you the info.

Cobra20646 08-11-2001 06:11 PM

Nick,
appreciate all you've sent so far. While under my car the other day I noticed that the pinion seal must be shot too, as there is a trickle of rear end fluid from the pinion. Just enough to make a few drip marks on the garage floor. Getting the parts together now so that in the fall I can start this project. From the looks of things the pinion looks like a piece of cake compared to the half shaft U joints %/
