Default What block is this ?

I have a small block. I have been using it as a mach up block in my coupe build. A friend got this from a friend with an inside from ford. I was told it was a pre production boss block. I have to say no its older than the new boss block. Kind of a shame it sat in his shop and got rusty and has been sitting in my shop getting more rusty. The block was new and is standard bore. Well it needs to be honed to standard bore. Cam bearings are installed, has thick main caps, that are marked S V O on the three center main caps and has main studs and nuts marked ARP. There is a large R and two sets of XXX' in the lifter valley. The rear main is marked YR3M and also B50 There is other casting numbers that I cant make out. Weight of the block is 142 pounds with the motor mounts on it. Can anyone tell me exactly what this block is.
Mark

That's might be a tough one. I have all the SVO catalogs from the '90s, but sounds like you are thinking it is later than that. If you manage to read any other casting numbers on the block post them and maybe someone can help.

It looks like it has bosses that are trilled/tapped for the roller lifter spider.

The casting number that matters is in the 4th picture down, lower right corner, below the B. Right about where the starter would be located.

Not sure if this is any help, but I took a quick look at my '99 SVO book and the race blocks had an "R" designation in the part number. Some were 302 wet sump and others were 351 wet or dry sump, but all were described as having 4-bolt mains.

Edited....

It's a Motorsports B50 R302 block I believe.

If the cylinders aren't pitted, I'll buy it off of you.

With 2-bolt mains? That's what threw me off. Just trying to learn every day...

Yes. Not all Motorsports blocks were 4-bolt.

Sell it to Mr Lykins Mark! If anyone can bring it to life and make it go, I believe he can.

If you get your hands on it, I hope you start a build thread from delivery to dyno!

Thanks guys for the replies. I went to do some more checking. Measured the bore right on 4.000. My new boss block is undersized and needs to be honed to 4.000. Got the two mixed up. I am not sure what I am going to do with it. Need to put a 331 together and not sure what block I will use. That's why I was asking what this block was. Brent are you still interested if it has to go oversize. It is standard right now and I don't know how much honing it will take to clean up. For my use I need to go .030 over so no big deal.

A little more info on the block. Larry yes the two holes in the lifter valley is tapped. On the deck surface the head bolt holes by the intake valley are blind holes and the holes at the outside of the block go into water. I think this is kind of strange.

Bernica I had some older catalogs too and could not match it up to anything.

Did a google search and came up with a few hit with pictures. It is a B50 and it seams that it was still available when the new boss block came out in 2007.

I wire brushed a few more numbers to read. The number by the starter is the same as on the main cap. I think there is a casting date that maybe someone can decode. The SVO on the main caps is what was throwing me for a loop because I was thinking mid 80's.

Definitely interested....

Trade for parts for your build? Sell outright? Let's make a deal.
