Default which cam?

402w. running the comp XR282RF which has 230 236 513 526 and 110. original cam used was a custom HR cam 240 248 624 600 110 that cam made over 560 hp with 1" spacer, new cam made 540 with out..both made the same torque 535. only thing is the smaller cam torque curve is a bit lower for street. peak on the big cam was@5400. small cam @4900 AFR205 heads. vic jr with a 950. thinking maybe because the lift is higher with that bigger cam would match the heads better? small cam is done by 500 lift.. could I advance the bigger cam 2 to 4 degees? I do have a 8" converter with 3000 to 3500 stall. street 69 mach1. my mechanic has this car dialed in now.. said just leave it alone.. motor has only maybe 100 miles test and tune.. many dyno runs..

If you're having to run race gas, a slow curve, or retarded ignition timing, it's not dialed in......it's band-aid'd.

You need a custom camshaft that will let you run pump gas and put the power where you want it.

$399 and shipping and you'll have it in about a week and a half.

You know, if he'd throw in a set of torque sticks to go under the tree, I think I'd go for it.

If you're not happy with the performance, and the mechanic says it's "dialed in", it sounds like you need a new mechanic..... or have Brent supply you with a cam that will do what you want it to do ( or both)....

no it runs great. nothing to do with my mechanic.. he owns a real 427 copo Camaro. he knows how to tune a car.. im just asking if my small cam is big enough for my AFR 205 heads.. ? with that low lift.. that's all.. I gave you both cam specs.. I have a lot of compression.. thus the race gas.. sure maybe a different cam change would work. but I don't think im really to pull the brand new motor apart at this time.. he has it running great with the parts I have at the moment..

10.5:1 is not high compression.

Almost every one of my engines leaves here with 10-10.5:1 and will easily run on 91-93 octane.

That camshaft *should* work unless it was installed way advanced.

But something is really wrong if you need race gas, retarded timing, and a slow curve in a Cobra....

I'm glad your mechanic owns a COPO Camaro, but he should have all kinds of warning sirens going off in his head right now that something is not right.

long story short. my new motor was built in 2009. with the ford motorsports block and stroker kit. 402w. original cam was the 240 248. dyno and tuned on a engine dyno. AFR 205 heads. vic jr 950 AED carb. had it dyno at least 9 pulls.. 750 carb was no good.. didn't like it. 950 made more torque and hp. few years later I wanted to get my mach1 finished.. so I took my motor trans to the first shop. the guy screwed it up. but? he wanted me to put in a smaller cam to bring down the torque curve. another engine builder local to me.. which runs a nhra pro stock car.. they installed the new smaller cam.. I did not know what they put in it until I got the motor back.. same torque less hp. torque curve is 500 rpms lower then the bigger cam. ok pulled my car out of shop one. took all my stuff over to my new great mechanic who re did my whole car from head to toe. everything was done.. gas tank to brakes.. he did not build my motor. called me one nite said come to the shop. took a ride in my car.. 50 50 mix had a bad ping. said he had to find a sweet spot with timing and curve. that did not work so he just sucked out all the gas and ran full110 vp race gas.. problem solved.. I had wanted to run pump but with these heads and cam I couldn't.. so my that is where I stand now with my car. he told me the car runs like a r ape.. I believe him. I had not driven the car yet.. since I just got it last weekend. snow rain here in nj. that is where my car stands now.

Something is wrong.....

Nobody with 10.5:1 should be forced to run race gas.

Either way, something is wrong. Cam is way advanced, compression ratio was miscalculated.....etc....something is wrong.

It won't even run on a 50/50 mix?

Something is *bad* wrong. I can run 12.5:1 on 50/50 mix.

Don't let him tell you that it's fine and you shouldn't touch it. Something is wrong.

I trust you that it runs. But if it needs 110 octane race gas, you're in a ridiculous situation. Why pay $6 a gallon and not be able to stop at a regular gas station because someone screwed up?
