Ok, you asked for it! :) Small Block Talk!

Bob, good suggestion, as I know there's a couple members with small blocks. :) Enjoy!

pbrown 11-20-2002 09:57 PM

Thanks Brent. Keep up the good work.

Jeff Frigo 11-21-2002 06:11 AM

Oh God!

rdorman 11-21-2002 09:18 AM

Finally!

A group that my engine feels at home with! Whats that? It says that a Cleveland is not a small block nor a big block and that it shares more with the 429/460 family then SB Windsors. I say it is having a identity crisis problem and tell it to shut up. I wonder if it will start again?

Either way, nice addition Brent. Got to go, medication is kicking in.

speed220mph 11-21-2002 10:16 AM

The Cleveland engine, or 335 Series, is unique, but similar to the small block, but with a cast-iron (heavy) timing-chain housing sealed off with a flat steel plate (cover). The 335 Series also includes the 351M/400, which has a higher-deck block. The 385 Series, or 429/460 engines, don't share any components with the 335 Series except the Ford name. Neither are big nor small blocks, but the 385 Series is like a small block on steroids with stagger-valve heads. And Cleveland heads will bolt on to a small block with some modifications. I cover a lot of this in my book, "How To Rebuild Your Ford V8", by HPBooks.

What a dilema. Then there is the situation that a "small block" can have a bigger displacement than a "big block". Take the 400 small-block Chevy vs. the 396 big block! Life was simpler when all the big three domestic auto companys had big- and small-block V8's only.

Looks like we need two other forums! Good luck.

How come I can't get to small block talk from the "quick forum hop"

computerworks 11-21-2002 10:40 AM

..it hasn't been around long enough to make the "Top Ten" quick hops!

Use CC Main Menu -> Cobra Talk Forums, for now.

rdorman 11-21-2002 11:51 AM

Not quite on the cleveland

Actuall the distributor and some of the valve train components are interchangable between the cleveland and the 385 series. But then you can use some BB chevy parts on the cleveland to. But that would be blasphemous

speed220mph 11-21-2002 12:05 PM

I understand about interchangability. Many parts and components can be interchanged with more or less rework, like Fiat rods used in a Model T engine. Things can get a bit ridiculous here. I installed Chevy 1.94" intakes and 1.60" exhaust valves in my HP289 heads. Hey, if it's cheap and works, go for it. And here's a good one, blasphemous or not: What 99.9999% of the Ford folks don't know is sb Chevy heads were used on sb Ford prototype engines during the early experimental stages of testing! Truth is stranger than fiction.

rdorman 11-21-2002 12:17 PM

Interesting

I never heard the small block chevy head one! Scary stuff!

The parts I mentioned require no reworking at all for interchanablity. For instance, the MSD pro billet distributor for the 351/400 C&M, 429 and 460 are all the same part number, 121-8577. Like the severe duty Manley valves with the 11/32 stems, same part number.

I am with you on the interchangablity, if you have enough money to support your local machine shop there is a huge number of swaps that CAN be accomplished.

Did you write the how to book? That would be cool to have our own group writer!

speed220mph 11-21-2002 01:01 PM

Yes, I wrote a lot of books, but edited more of them. I was the auto editor/publisher for HPBooks before HP was sold and moved from Tucson to Lala land. We published about 50 books. The last one was "Engine Builder's Handbook". Scarey thing is I'm gearing up to resume my auto writing. Just trying to decide on a subject. One possibility is "How to Hotrod Your Small Block Ford". Another is how to fabricate stock cars. Any suggestions would be helpful.

rdorman 11-21-2002 01:50 PM

Very Cool!

We have our own 'speed' author in our midst!

How about a 'tips and tricks' type book regarding cobra builds? Small number of copies sold but you could sell them for a pretty penny. There are a boat load of 'how to hot rod your yadda yadda' books out there. How about a Cobra news paper full of tips and tricks, stories etc. I would subscribe. There is that new group National Kit Car Club that is supposed to be coming out with a new rag. How about a column writer. SAAC sure could use a LOT of help in their news letters!

Good luck!

I actually have Chevy Z28 springs on my 289 HiPo heads. They drop right in, are much stiffer and react quicker than standard Ford springs. Not my idea....told to me by the guy who did my engine.

Turk 11-21-2002 08:23 PM

This area will be patrolled very closely by two moderators and the administrator who are all BIG BLOCK owners...Watch your steps!!

Ernie,
What are you doing in here?
You are not getting ready to petition Brent for a "NO block" forum, are you?
Get busy, get something.
Islands are too beautiful to see it with a 10 speed.

Ummm....

Is this the place to discuss Vobra motors??

You know, 1600CC air cooled small blocks? :3DSMILE:

speed220mph 11-22-2002 12:04 PM

Ren Man: About using "stiffer" (higher rate) Z28 springs on a HiPo head, they are not needed. Too stiff on the valve spring springs and the result is undue wear and wasted power. I say not needed because my hp289 with stock springs goes to 8,000 rpm and closes the 1.94" intakes with a 0.510" lift cam. As for "hesitation", I'm not sure what you mean. All a valve spring has to do is keep the slack out of a valve train; lifter on the lobe, pushrod on the lifer, rocker arm against the pushrod and so on.

Good luck with your small block. A big blocks with gobs of torque is nice at the bottom end, but a small block that pulls strong up into the 7,000 rpm range is sweet.
