Dart Block
SBF Folks;
After much soul searching I have decided to go with a 418W stroker for my Unique build. I like the Dart block (427W?) but it's hard for me to justify the expense. I know the bare Dart is cleaner than a used unit, thereby saving me some machine-shop expense, but I don't know how much. Can anyone who has used the Dart chime in with some facts and figures from their own experience? Thanks in advance. Bill Stradtner P.S. No wife to sell this to, just me. |

I got one so these are facts. The block is NOT finished decked If you are going to use a stroker kit most do not use standard bore pistons so you will have to bore block. If you use standard bore pistons you will still have to finish hone. The block will have to be clearenced for the stroker crank. The front and rear main caps will have to be machined to clear oil pans. Add a few hundred for machining. BUT You will have a block stronger than the Nascar blocks, you will also have a motor that will kick the crap out of 95% of all the BB 427 Sideoilers that you will encounter. :D Good Luck, RD |

All the racers out here are using the Dart block over the similar spec SVO blocks. For roughly the same money, you have to do less machine work on the Darts. The SVO needs the lifter bores honed, and also tunnel boring - both of which I THINK are already done in the Dart. The oiling system in the Dart also looks superior.
Too bad they hadn't been released when I ordered my SVO block... X - I had my engine built to a specific combination that my builder has had a lot of success with. This meant a 9.5" block, 6.25" rods and 3.9" stroke. JE made a set of standard bore pistons with my rings sizes, pin height and dish shape for the price of "some off the shelf", .030" stroker pistons. I've gotta say that I was amazed, but not complaining! :) |

RD - it turned out alright. The engine builder wanted the longest rods possible, and this put the pin up inside the oil ringland, but that's what he wanted. Who was I to argue???
One other weird thing that I found with the SVO, and it wasn't a big deal, BUT.... when I tried to bolt up the engine mounts - they wouldn't fit!!! SVO blocks have a strengthening rib that goes down to the engine mounting tab. I couldn't find any Ford engine mount that would fit around this rib, so I had to get the grinder out..... |

Who asked you your opinion? Why is it you seem to always stick your nose in every one else's business? Having spent 15 minutes on Cobraforum (or whatever the heck it is called) and reading all the hate filled BS that those/you guys toss around as well as all the negative comments about Club Cobra and it's members, it is irritating to see your little leader come back over here and start again with his BS about big blocks. Craig that motor mount situation is puzziling, I wonder why they left the rib there?
BTW is that 805 hp your dyno numbers? Very impressive. One of our CSX racers has a 306 CI twin turbo the puts out 760 HP to the rear wheels. Left me at the Glen like I was backing up. Come on over to www.clubcranky.com and check out the gallery RD |

How much is one of these Dart blocks without the machine work? Any websites to check out on the actual suppliers, etc.?

Last I checked they were $1,995.

Pick up a copy of the new Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, and you'll find dozens of vendors selling these blocks to the general public for right around the price that "southernfriedcj" stated above.

Thanks Bill S. as well. Want to do some homework on these. Although I must ask one more question, what makes these so much better than a standard old Ford Windsor block that are readily available for a few hundred bucks as a core? I literally ask this as a layman at this point.
