Default 392 street legal?

I was looking in the ford racing catalog and it said that the Ford 392 stroker engine is not legal for sale in emissions controlled vehicles. Does that mean you cannot use this engine in a car that you would drive on public roads?

Sure it does....it's perfectly streetable....I'm sure they're just talking about the complexity these days of getting emissions certified...in states like Cali....

I think "emission controlled vehicles" means vehicles that are usually less than 30 years old, with functioning and mandatory smog equipment...if you were building a pre'73 vehicle, with no smog checks, ( maybe a '57 Ford, or a '32, etc), it would be a great application.

It's a standard legal disclaimer. Virtually every piece of speed equipment you buy today has this disclaimer written on it.

However, and this is a big HOWEVER! If you plan on dropping the FMS 392 into your new Cobra, and then getting it registered, you may have a problem with your State DMV if the year the car is registered as is based on the year of the engine.

You'd be better off finding a pre-'75 engine, salvaging the parts you need, and doing the buildup from there. You might find you can buy the entire pre-'75 car with a 351W in it in your local Want Advertizer for about the cost of a junkyard core.

There are better, and less expensive ways to build 393W power. Current issue of MM&FF has 393W cylinder head shootout with some impressive ##'s.
