Aussie 302?
HELP!!
Got the chance of buying a 302 block in the UK. Can anyone confirm how to tell where the engine was made if it has the following block No : D1OE-6015-AA. Its listed in Tom Moroes book as a '71 302 (his book only does Windors) So is this a Winsdor block? The Ad has it as an Aussie Block, can anyone help just in case I make a mistake? Thanks very much Andy |

Howdy,
The easiest way to tell is by looking at the timing chain area. The Aussie/ Clevelands have a flat t/c cover beacuse the block sticks out in this area. The windsor is flat, and the front of the block is even w/ the front edge of the front main bearing cap. Plus the A/C have the thermostat the fits into the block, right in front of the intake. The W is in the intake. Paul |
The 302 Windsor and 302 Cleveland are completely different motors to look at. The quick way to tell at a glance is that the Cleveland has the thermostat housing in the block where the windsor has it attached to the intake manifold as Stengun mentioned.
The Cleveland is also a phyisically bigger engine. the heads are very different in design with a canted valve arrangement much like a BB Chev. If it is a 302 Cleveland there isn't a lot of performance stuff in the US but there is a ton Aussie developed performance goodies available down here. BTW 302 and 351 Aussie Cleveland blocks are essentially the same. They share the same bore but the 351 has a longer stroke and shorter rods. There were plenty of 302 Windsors sold down under as well. They have been in production cars in one form or another up until last year. Cheers |
can you tell from these pics?

I don't recall there was EVER a 302 Clevleand block offered in the US. If so, I'm surprised having never heard ANYONE reference a 302 as a "C". In fact, I never heard a 302 refered to as a "W" (Windosor). It's just a "302". Might be Mexican block, or truck block but thats about it. With some modification you COULD run the 351 C heads on the 302 but that was NOT common and resulted in a very high rpm engine that was NOT street friendly in any way!
Now when you talking 351's, yeah, it can get REAL complicated! Is that a 351 W or C? Or perhaps the 351M (which was STILL a "C" but modified for use in trucks). Then came along the 400 "C" or "M" but it was NEVER a "W". What happened down under or across the pond could be a whole different story! Andys pic is CERTAINLY without a doubt either a 302 or 351W. It most certainly is NOT a "C" engine. Ernie |
302 Windsor
Andy,
Your pictures there definitely shows a 302 Windsor. Cheers, Bryan |
Ernie, There most certainly was a 302 Cleveland sold down under. Basically the same motor as the 351C just a shorter stroke. A popular mod to hop them up was to install a 351 crank. The longer rods can be used with some pistons with a higher pin height to make a 351C long rod motor.
Andy, That's a Windsor alright. Was there a boat attached to the motor by a length of chain? it looks a bit rough, what are the bores like? Cheers |
Thanks Again.
In answer to the question.
I dont know what state the bores are in, Ive only got these pics but I have asked for more. Ive been offered this engine for £250 and in the UK this isnt a bad price. I have the option of an engine to be brought in from the US and the importer will gaurantee the block and crank crack free for me, it will be a pre 86 and be srtd or low overbore. Am I better off with the US imported engine? (cost £400) Or do i take a risk on the Aussie unit?!? how can I tell if its a 302 block or a 351 block, I know it has 302 heads but wont they fit a 351 block? I need a 302 not a 351 block. Thanks Again |
hi andy look on uk cobra web site ,parts for sale in forum ,crendon man has a newly bored 302,crank pistons ect, and he lives down south, i have 4v heads. live up north no wippits but ferrets and flat cap bacon and black pud barms and pies from wigan cheers don

Tough call by just "looking" to tell wether the block/heads are 302 or 351 W. There virtually the same engine.
Sounds like a guy might have the same problem with the "C" engines also. Is it a 302 C or a 351 C? I wonder if they look virtaully identical also? Ernie |
Andy,
A photo looking at the front of the block will be able to give a 100% verdict as the deck height is 3/4" higher on a 351W than on the 302W. Even the photo looking from above looks like it has a low deck height. Cheers, Bryan |
Photo like this?
Bryan,
Try this photo. had to cut off most of th engine to meet the file size limit. Cheers Andy |
Uh didnt work!!

Ive just noticed....
Ive just noticed something odd.
How do you bolt on the water neck when the manifold is so close to the water pump ? there does not appear to be any room for the water neck? Is there something fishy about this? Cheers Andy |
