Best small block for a cobra?
I plan on buying a Cobra next year and have many questions about the best small block for that application. I will be buying a BDR car and they offer a 385HP, Ford 351W. I think I would prefer a 351C, maybe a stroker. Any ideas out there? I can buy a 425HP 351C for $5500.

Before the debate begins figure out how you wish to drive the car most of the time and get something suitable for that. When you get tired of it get a big block. ;)

I am a big block guy, however my answer to your question would be a 351 Windsor "stroker" engine. Any engine with less than 500 horsepower isn't even worth installing in a Cobra. My second choice would be a DOHC modern Cobra Mustang engine. My third choice would be a 351 BOSS engine.

I thought BDRs did not normally support big blocks. Do they have them?

BDR's come with mounts for a 302 or 351 motor.

I had the same idea, I asked Reg at Backdraft about it and he told me they have no headers for a 351 C at this time. I think you will be happy with a "W" stroker. |
Be true to the original..........put together a nice,radical 289,with a very lumpy cam.

Cobra engine choices
1. street/ show, only an FE will do. 2. Drags, go with most any BB 3. Road racing, a small block will beat those others. Real men race their Cobras...................... |

How about a 331 or 347 stroker based 302. I'm real happy with my little 302. End the end do what you want to do to be happy. I don't get into the BB SB debate. If your worried about HP go to a 351 stroker set up. In the end what ever motor you choose get the best heads you can afford. Induction parts make power, I've seen 393 and 408 strokers on the dyno that make from 500hp to 600hp plus.

I am buying a BDR car and they only come with motor mounts for a small block. I always wanted a high HP, SB for the lighter weight. I had always heard that SB's handled better than the BB's. I am looking for performance AND handling. Most of the opinions seem to lean toward a 351W Stroker.

In my Cobra..
%/ Using a 351w with a stroker kit. Victor Jnr. Holley 750, Dart II heads, etc. etc. Runs hard and was not big dollars. The BDR at last years 'Run N Gun' had a 351 ( if my memory is..)and was a real screamer. Perhaps the guys can give you some details. I'm sure you will be happy with the BDR. I can guarantee you I was very impressed with what I saw at the 'Run N Gun'. The BDR handled very well through corners and under braking. :3DSMILE: Sure you will be happy. Cheers Bernie |
How about a Roush 427R stroker. 550 HP / 535 FT/LBS Torque.
4 bolt main Dart block with all forged internals. Also carries a warranty. I've ridden in a SPF with this engine and it is super quick. Pulls strong all the way thru the rev range. Just my 2 cents Mark |
351W bored .090 over and the 7" stroker kit gets you to 735 cubic inches.
Has to be the best bang for the buck. I happen to have a spare 7" stroke crank here at my shop if you are interested. $5,000. It's billet, of course. |
Stop being a bunch of girls, and put a big block chev in! Mr Cranky, I have a road race car for you to test your small block against anytime - just fly yours over to New Zealand, or mine to you - and the race is on!

PS - Midohasp - doesnt that kind of size technically make the small block into a very large big small block?
What are these motors like? dont they try to shake themseleves to bits at that kind of stroke? |
My vote goes for the all aluminium LS1. I'm biased though :D
