Alternative to solid motor mounts
Well I made the stupid mistake of putting the stock motor mounts in, and now I've got the pipes banging against the body cutouts and chipping my paint...
I know solid mounts would fix this, but I've driven 5.0 Mustangs with them, and thats shaky enough, let alone what it would be like in a 2200lb car...I'd like to keep it comfortably drivable, and also keep all my teeth where they are...
Anyone have any sugestions as to how I could keep the motor in it's place better, without going to a solid mount?
Thanks all!

Use a torque strap from the driver's side head down to the frame.
Mine is very much like the March alternator adjustable bracket.Has heim rod ends.
It does work at keeping the engine from rocking over and tearing off the sidepipe to frame bracket.

polyurethane
I'm pretty sure that Prothane or Energy suspension makes a polyurethane engine mount that will replace a factory mount?
Hope this helps

My 428 was balanced and blueprinted by Carbone Machine and you could balance a quarter on the air cleaner while the engine was running and I was running a 236 dur and 570 lift solid lifter cam.
Solid motor mounts will amplify everything out of balance.

You can modify stock motor mounts by adding bolts through the middle. That way you benefit from the rubber dampning the vibration but the bolts keep the rubber from stretching under torque so your sidepipes don't hit the body cutouts. I had that problem and corrected it by modifying my motor mounts. My engine is an FE but I assume you can do the same thing with small block motor mounts. Here's the details from ERA's website:

I just found similar information on the ERA site for the FIAs.

Assuming you're running a 302, or 351W based motor, open your Summit or Jegs catalog and order a set of Energy Suspension polyurethane SBF motor mounts, AND trans mount. They soak up high frequency vibrations, but plant engine solid.
If your car has newer frame mounts that use late Mustang motor mounts, it's a bolt in. (Single bolt, 14mm nut). If old style, you'll have to fabricate frame mounts.
Solves the header pipe to body, and air cleaner to hood scoop clearance issue quite nicely. Car (instead of engine) now rocks a little with engine idling.

I'm satisfied with the Energy Suspension urethane mounts I'm using. My engine makes a bunch of torque and I hook up well enough to get 1.5 60' times. No more banking the air cleaner on the hood. If you go with something similar, be sure to change both motor mounts and transmission mount to avoid unpleasantness.

So if I go with the energy mounts, do ya'll figure I'll have to pull the motor right out? Or you figure I'll be able to just life her up enough to change things around?
Thanks so far all!

All depends on which motor mounts are in the car now.
If late model '80's - '90's 5.0 mounts now, lift engine up enough to get old mounts out, and new ones in. Might have to take headers off to get at the mounts. Could even do one side at a time. Trans mount is an easy swap. Mounts have one 14mm bolt pointing down at a 45* angle. Save these bolts as new ES mounts don't have them.
If older style cross bolted mounts are used, you have some fabricating to do. If frame mounts are welded to frame, it may not be worth the effort.
I'd contact BRM before going any further.

Hey Guys,
Building a Superformance Cobra with 351w/427 engine. Trying to locate the engine mounts for this car the 351 mounts cause the engine to sit up too far and the header pipes hit fender where they come out. Any help would be appreciated. Thank, R.B.

Not sure where you are located, but the Olthoff Racing guys have designed a new motor mount for that engine. Give Dennis a call and he can ship some out to you.
