Heater hose
I was wondering if it is necessary to run the hose from the manifold to the water pump bypassing the thermostat, or can those ports be plugged? I'm not going to run a heater.

Good question, I'm not running a heater either & was told that I should run a hose from the manifold to the water pump. I didn't get around to doing it yet but like JAC would like to see what you guys say.

You need that bypass hose. Water is pushed through the block by the water pump. Then up the back, through the heads, and into the front of the intake manifold. If the hose is blocked, and the thermostat is closed, where would the water go? You're exactly right - nowhere. It just sits there and pressurizes the block and heads.
As the water around the heads gets hot, where can it go? Nowhere. The water is getting hot, but the thermostat remains closed because it's a long way from the heads. The purpose of the bypass is to move the water in a complete circle with a closed thermostat: Pump --> block --> heads --> manifold ---> pump. Creates a nice gentle warming cycle, and eliminates hot spots. Once the water in the closed circle starts getting too hot, the thermostat opens. |

I also heard that you can drill a couple of holes in the thermostat to get a little flow, but I think I'll just make the loop. |
I always drill a 3/16" hole in the thermostat. Place the hole at 12 o'clock during the install. It's not a big enough hole to allow much flow. But it does make it an open loop, and air bleeds out really easy. I never have trouble burping the system. It pretty much burps itself.

Other inlet on water pump?

My water pump on the Shell Valley 302 Cobra I just bought looks similar to your picture. When examining my water pump I discovered another inlet just below the top bypass. It had a hose clamp and a broken piece of hose on it. Was this capped somehow and broke off? I have no car heater. |
Bill that is the one that would be attached from a heater core with another hose taking presurized coolant from the top of the intake manifold to the heater core too. Napa & Ford sell a small rubber cap or it can be internally threaded for 1/4" pipe and a tapered pipe plug used for a more secure fix.

My Edelbrock pump has threaded ports. I blocked the lower one. As said, you can purchase rubber caps locally if yours are not threaded.

Do you honestly think that automotive engineers are dumb and add unnecessary costs to a car or engine? There are valid reasons for a bypass hose as mentioned above. Its not nice to fool with mother Ford. Always use a bypass and a thermostat. It does not matter whether you have a heater or not. Also, the small hole in the thermostat mentioned above is always a good idea.

JAC...Run the bypass hose as is shown in ROSCOE'S picture. It is available at NAPA.
My Cobra did not have it on the 351W engine when I got it. It had rubber block off caps installed. One day I was showing my car to a friend and as I brought up the RPM to about 4,000 we got a big suprise. The cap blew it's end clean off and I had a huge anti-freeze mess all over the motor and engine compartment to clean up. Believe me, run the bypass hose. Save yourself alot of grief. Looks like I'll be running the bypass hose too. I'll also be pulling the thermostat out to drill that 3/16" hole in it. Better to do it now while there's no anti-freeze in the engine!
