More Power 4 My 351w
 
i HAVE A 351w CRATE MOTOR. juST LOOKING FOR IDEAS FOR THE MOST ECONOMICAL WAY TO GAIN A BIT MORE HORSE POWER. gOAL: CLEARLY OVERE 400-450- HP OR SO

i'M AT JUST UNDER 400HP (APPRX 385) NOW.

tHANKS FOR ANY INFO.

What do you have done so far? Is it just a stock 351 crate motor? Alum heads, cam specs etc?

My original plan was:
408 stroker
forged .030 +19.30cc dish
forged I beams
cast crank
60cc vic jr's
pro products typhoon intake
edelbrock performer 750 carb
pro comp 1.6 roller rockers
.520/.544 234/244 112 separation cam
March alum pulleys

Gordon (http://www.levyracing.com/) estimated 485hp and 540-550TQ, he recommended more cam and a holley carb to optimize my setup. I'm going more cam and the edelbrock dual quad setup.

I made 400 hp with my 351W with Edelbrock RPM Performers, flat tappet crower cam with the following grind:

INTAKE: Duration: 297º Lift: 0.538 Clearence Hot: 0
EXHAUST: Duration: 308º Lift: 0.534 Clearence Hot: 0
Duration at .050" Intake: 236 Exhaust: 242

and SRP pistons pushing 11:1 compression.

Like you, I wanted more so I sent the heads and intake to FPS in Anaheim for porting and a custom grind roller cam. Troy tells me I should see not less than 450 hp after the porting and cam install and with the right tweaking, perhaps as much as 475. Just got everything back the other day.

There are plenty of matched component packages from Holley and Edelbrock (intake, heads, cam) that are proven 400+ hp.

Stroke it, cam it and put some AFR heads on it= 500hp+

Budget: Carb/Cam/Intake may give you the extra few ponies depending on what you have now... I have seen carb swaps alone giving 25hp+ gains...

AFR's own website links to the cylinder head shootout. The AFR heads outperformed every other head in the 331-347 strokers except for the 393W strokers, where with the same cam, carb, and intake, the TrickFlow heads thumped the AFRs.

The motor in the sequel article looks just like mine!! and has almost the same equipment (carb, intake, AFR205's, ignition, stroke, even the color).

I second that.. I put a vortech on my 03 Mustang GT and bumped it by 150 HP.

But don't forget.. if your crate motor was built for high compression or meant to withstand 500hp... a blower might not be for you!

For making the car quicker and fun the best mod I put on my Cobra was the Mickey Thompson ET street drag radials. The Pro-Systems carb was the next best. The the headers and side pipes were good too.

I have a holly carb. its specs a total of 385 HP. I was looking to get into the over 400 range. I thinging of a supercharger as well, but not sure. My overall performance is great. I'm just looking for a bit more perhaps.

I like scarring my self at times

Do you know the cam specs of your engine? What heads and intake? If you are running a milder cam and some smaller heads, the supercharger is going to definitely get you over the 400hp mark, but with poor flowing heads and intake coupled with the wrong cam, it definitely wouldn't be optimal! If youre heads and intake are already constricting airflow on the 351, it's going to be just as constrictive if you are force feeding it.

His setup includes:

thanks Jay, I think if it were me, I'd go with a better head before boost. Those heads are kinda pushing the small side for a 351.

With that head/intake/cam combo and optimal jetting and timing, he should already be at 410 -420.

Did you dyno the car or are you just estimating? More times than not the estimate does not match the actual hp. The motor has to be tweeked to get it to the max based on your components. Then take it from there.

I recall when I first dyno'd my car it came in disappointingly low. I faxed the sheets to Barry Grant and they made several small suggestions. Went back to the dyno and picked up 40 hp.

My buddy had the exact motor in his BDR (ford racing crate) Put a good ignition on it (MSD), Nice holly with mechanicall secondaries, tweaked the timing and jetting and he was in the 410+ range...

The Ford Racing 351-385HP crate motor actually dynos at about 410 ± 5HP with a Holley carb. If you want to get up to the 450 475 range with that bottom end you'll need more head flow and a different cam. There are a number of heads that will get the job done but some like the AFR 205s will require flycutting the pistons because of the 2.08 intake valve. You will want something that flows about 280CFM or better at .600 lift. The factory pistons will take a 2.02 intake valve with no machine work so you might be better off sticking with the Ford Z heads. You'll need to do a good multiangle valve job and maybe touch up the port to get the flow you want at high lift but they'll fit and they flow better at low and mid lift than many of the others which helps to preserve good driveability on the street. The Victor JRs also flow well but use a 2.05 intake valve so you may have piston to valve contact. Not sure about that. With any of these I heads I'd use a 232-240 @.050 .566/.574 on 108° intake centerline with either 110 or 112° LSA. Lastly take enough of a cut off the heads to get compression up to 9.5 to 1 and you'll have a pretty potent combination that will still drive well on the street.
