Which Holley is best?
I've read and re read all the posts on this forum that relate to carbs and have one question.
Which Holley carb is best for MY purposes? I respect all of your opinions. So let me have it! 302/350 hp FFR with 3.73 rear end. Mild cam, 9.5 to 1 compression. Tuned for max street driveability. Reworked distributor curve completely. Have Edelbrock 650 Thunder AVS and can't tune out the cornering stumble and stalling on hard stopping. Slight problems with the secondaries when accellerating, but liveable. Should I get the Avenger with vacuum secondaries, The DP or the HP with mechanical secondaries. . This thing will NEVER be raced but will occasionally get nailed hard on an on ramp or away from a light early in the morning. So I want the best street carb available. Looking for the smooth transition from idle to primaries to secondaries under normal driving conditions and at WOT. Does this carb exist? Will take all recommendations under advisement but am leaning heavily to Holley. Not opposed to having a shop custom tune it for my engine. |
For your application and use in mind, I would go with a 600/650 Holley with vacum secondaries.........Very easy to tune and will be very mild mannered in street/cruising driving.........A 600/650 Holley Double Pumper would be my next choice.......
Have used both on my 350hp, 351-W and now have the 600 DP on......Not a lot of difference in perfomance or driveability from a "seat-of-the-pants" feel for me anyway........ David |
What David said is a bulleye.. I'm running a 351Cleveland with a 650 DP. I have a collection of slightly used 750 carburetors for sale..
|
Won't I have the same troubles with Holley's vacuum secondaries that I had with the Ed. Aren't these cars a little too light to not stumble due to low vacuum at WOT?

My present 600 DP was taken out of a garbage can at a freind's shop,(it is at least 20 years old) he threw it away, said it was no good on his 289.....I took it for parts, once I tore it down, all it needed was a good cleaning and the proper jets..........He had it jetted about 10 jet sizes too rich, guess he thought bigger was better....... My next best carb was a 600 vac. sec. carb, remanufactered by Holley, bought at Auto Zone............great little carb and gave excellent gas mileage, still have that one......... David |
Not really, what I did was buy the "spring kit" that goes in the vacum thingy. You can get them at Auto Zone or other parts places and then do a little expirementing with your set-up..... Every engine will be a little different.....I changed the spring 2 or 3 times till I found the one that worked best on my car and that was all that was needed..........

Get a Holley Street Avenger. It comes with an assortment of springs for the secondaries. I put in the lightest one and have absolutely no stumble when the secondaries open. I bolted it on and it was jetted perfectly right out of the box (confirmed with a LM-1).

I needed to know that too,got good inputs by the guys and you can also go on the HOLLEY web site. They have an awsome site where you can choose the carb. and intake for your application. It will tell you at the end after answering the questions exactly what size of carb you need. I did it and it confirmed exactly what some pro builders where recommending for my stock 302. A Holley 570 cfm street avenger.
|
I recently bolted a Holley 670 cfm Street Avenger on to my 351W and right out of the box it was perfect. For the money and ease of installation, you can't beat it.

I have a set of twin 750's on my SO, it's all about balance. My engine runs very well on the front single carb around town. When you stick your foot in it the second carb wakes up and offers the muscle, balancing your carbs in a progressive manner will make you smile if done properly. Keep tweaking the progressive linkage, a quarter turn on the linkage adjustments rods can become important Where do you want it to kick in and at what RPM? |
I'm running a 750 holley w/ vac secondaries on my 331 ci/400hp. It couldn't run any better. I have an Edelbrock dual plane intake and Edelbrock performer heads. The engine breathes very well. Everyone said the 750 would be too big. I agree if it was a DP. But since you drive around town on the front two barrels, it's perfect. If you put your foot in it, you get all 4 barrels and go like hell. Remember Shelby put 715 DP's on the GT-350 and it only had 289 ci and 305 hp. I think todays intakes and heads breath better than the old hipo fords did in 1966.

Cobrabill....
The carb you are trying to sell looks suspisciously like a Holley knockoff!!! I think like said above a 600 or 650 DP would be purfect. |

Mechanical secondaries are best, you learn to control the secondaries with your foot.

willys holley carbs are very good
There's a shop in Mt Carmel, Il that customize holley carbs and they do a very good job. One of their clients is Joe Gibbs racing and they are for a reason. I bought one of their 600 cfm holleys for my 351 windsor and it really made a big difference in the way the car performed, how easy it started and how much more pop it had in throttle response. Check them out. They have a web site. The name of the business is Willy's Carb shop. They also have a wheel dyno so they can fine tune and get the most out of your motor.
