For those that think you have to have a big block to make big power

I was riding my jet ski this weekend and it occurred to me....

My lil' ol' Seadoo has 1.5L (about 91 cubes) and makes 250 horsepower.

Not bad....for an engine with less displacement than a 2liter of soda.

It's not an apples/oranges comparison......

The PWC engines are water cooled and intercooled (so they can run more compression and more boost) and it revs to 8200 rpms....but still.

1972 porsche 917-30. 5.4L, 1500hp @ 39psi.

My lil' ol' RX-7 has 1.3L and makes 255 horsepower. And I don't need no stinking pistons, valves or cams. :JEKYLHYDE

Nothing like trumping your Champ Car with a little F1 power, the first time I was at the US GP...I thought my ears were going to bleed. I'm still in aw with 19000+ RPM shifts.

Cosworth_Ken 04-01-2008 06:56 PM

:D

Our Cosworth F-1 Engine qualified at 21,000 RPM in 2006 in the Williams car.
I believe it was the highest revving four stroke engine ever in F-1.
An F-1 engine does utilize pnuematic valve springs though...
Since I know the HP numbers from both the V-10's and V-8's in F-1
I can say the Champ Car engine made more power!
The F-1's did however; make upwords of 1,500 HP in the late 80's with their Turbo engines. They wouldn't last much longer than a qualifiying session though....
Also forgot to add the the $ comment....
Add a zero to the Champ Car engine cost above and you'll have F-1 costs.

Don't know if that was to me  If it was it's a V6 Buick 231 with a turbo running pump gas and methonal . Had the motor in my daughters "driver/beater" Buick GN that weighs 3660#s. She ran 9.94 @138 in street trim :JEKYLHYDE :D
A lot of these new small motors out there today can crank out some power !! :MECOOL: I was thinking of using the motor in a Cobra BUT I don't think it would go over well ;)

Curtt Scott runs cobracountry.com he sells a DVD called "bitten by the snake" It is getting kind of old but it is still a great Cobra DVD. They talk to several cobra owners with "alternative power plants" A Dodge V10 and a Buick GN V6.

I can see that happening. Look up Ken Duttweiler, people. He built and raced some nasty GS/GN/GSN cars.

Yes he does !!! I have known him since 1986! Dammm I am really getting old . Still a few of his out there in the 7's !! Unbelievable BUT with technology thats out there today they even have 4 banger's flying !!

AMF 04-02-2008 11:21 AM

There's no doubt there are some low usage/race applications with wicked hp/volume ratios.

I was speaking more along the lines of viable "everyday" or high usage applications.

My jet ski is supposed to last for a few hundred hours of operation.

As for some of the other stuff, it's truly amazing just how much technology has advanced and just what some people can do with small engines.

As a side note, the GN is one of the top 10 "tuner" cars of all time. It ranks up there with the 03 Mustang SVT Cobra and the SRT-4. All are cars you can drive off the lot, and with a small amount of cash and some minor modifications, you can surprise any number of folks with fully built street cars.
