Distributor Question

I was going to do the Pertronix converstion on my old point distributor and get the Crane adjustable vacuum advance, but my distributor shaft is shot and I heard Crane went out of business. Does anyone have experience with those small Procomp ready to run distributors or the Pertronix vacuum advance distributor? Not the HEI versions.

no experience with those, but I'm curious why you are (apparently) not considering MSD ?

I'm running the MSD "Ready to Run" distributor myself. I DON'T like the non-adjustable vacuum advance unit. I'd like to be able to adjust not only the advance but also the minimum vacuum signal requirement. By the way, I run mine WITH an MSD-6AL box even though the dist could run stand alone. I have my setup wired in such a way that's easy to unplug one set of wires and plug in the other to by-pass the MSD-6AL box in the case of failure. But mainly, I wanted the vacuum advance unit and that's why I went with it. The "backup configuration" is just a nice secondary thing to have too.

I also have the msd ready to run distributor, and added a msd digital 6 box a while back. I took the vac. advance off of the distributor.

Purchase the Accel Adj Vac Advance Mod

I have used both the Crane and the Accel vacuum advance modules on an MSD disribution (GM style). The Crane advance was adjustable only with a step plate that phyiscally blocks the movement of the diafram attachment rod to the distributor plate. Because I was using a MSD versus GM distribtor I could not easily use the step plate. The Accel unit uses a allen key in the vacuum port to change BOTH the rate of advance and the LIMIT. You want to be able to change the LIMIT of advance from the module.

Presently, I am running only 5 degrees of vacuum advance for better trottle response and fuel mileage. The 5 degree limit ensures that I will not have too much total advance at any RPM given my initial and centrifical settings.

I really didn't consider the MSD distributor because they seemed a lot more expensive. Maybe I should check into it further. I was however planning on running the MSD 6AL. Right now I am leaning towards the Pertronix as you can adjust the centrifical and the vacuum advance.
