You can change the .64 to a .82 but it is alittle costly, the parts alone are $550.00, but that's cheaper than a new tranny. jimig@standardtransmission.com

I have a 3.23 rear with the .82 and I love the setup. I have quite a bit of torque and I think the tall rear has allowed me to be here to post. I can't imagine how many roads I would have spun off if I had a 3.73 or shorter rear. Anyway, ratios are about as perfect as you can get now. I suspect a 3.31 would be just as good.

just put a 3.50 rear in and wish i had .82 for crusin . The .64 puts me 2000 rpm at 70 mph,it is quite a jump from 4th to 5 th. On the other hand i get 16 mpg going 75 to 80.

I have 3:55 rear gears, TKO 600 .64, 25 1/4" tires.
I like the 2.87 1st gear, it better with my smaller rear tires. I cruise at 70 around 2000 rpms. I like it. Dwight

Hi Guys,

I am a pontiac guy (65 gto) and have a TKO 600 in my car with the .82 overdrive. I recently switched my rear gears from 3.42 to 3.73 and have been checking into swapping from the .82 to the .64. There is a company (probably many) that offer the pieces you need for $548 US. But I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing a swap. Obviously we would have to do some work to make sure neither of us got shorted but I think it can be done. From what I have learned the output shaft has the 5th gear mounted on it, so it needs to be changed and the sincro set.

I bought my TKO from Keisler a little over a year ago.

Jimi do you get guys interested in trading parts? Thanks

My E-mail is rguido@shaw.ca

Here my web site for the car http://members.shaw.ca/rguido/dad.htm

Every once in awhile we get some calls on swaping out to a .82, so I will keep you in mind, I can just put them in contact with you. But your best bet might be seeing if anyone here would like to do a swap. Try posting in the parts wanted or the parts for sale area, that will be your best bet. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Rather than change the trans\rear gear ratio, I rebuilt the motor and selected a cam that would work with what I had.

OK, a fairly radical approach to a gearing delimna.

That is always an option, changing the stick(cam) is easy enough, besides nothing runs like a fresh motor. What was your old cam range and what is your new cam range? Also how much of a difference could you tell from the swap? jimig@standardtransmission.com

I had a solid roller that 'came on the cam' at 3000 and higher, up to 7000 or better. Pretty radical. With my high gears (CLOSE ratio top loader and 3:31 rear) it was just hell getting around town. If traffic slowed on the freeway to much below 60 mph I would run THIRD gear.

Bear in mind Hawaii is not a 'fast' state. Our maximum speed limit is 65 mph on H1 only for a SHORT distance (several miles). Other wise it's 55 mph. It's pretty rare to find folks driving 75 or 80 (if it's a red car, that might be me, in third, winding it up).

New cam is flat tappet (those darn solid rollers break you know) and is Comp Cams 292S. Comes on around 2000, tops out about 6200. The combo works really well for me, nice lumpy idle, good power, even decent gas mileage. Up from 6 to 10 mpg.

IF I could get a trans ratio similiar to a WIDE ratio top loader AND .8 (eight) OD, that would be perfect!

If you go with the 0.64 fifth gear, rear end should be 3.73.

Thats what I have. First gear has tremendous pull. Fourth gear is OK for 55 MPH highway. Fifth gear for 70 MPH or higher - great fuel MPH on long highway drives.

In 5th gear at 100 MPH, I'm only doing 3000 RPM. Just cruisin'

If the car will only be used local and/or trailered, I'd go for the 0.82

I am glad they let you cruise at 100mph in Squantum. How much do they pay Plumbers?
I'd like to move there. They won't let you cruise above 70mph in Maryland and then your pushing your luck.

That's because you'd run into Virginia or Delaware in a matter of seconds.

C'mon up to PA; my 0.68 allows 80 mph+ at 2700 rpm and the cruising there is just fine.

I guess that instead of picking a 5th. gear on final drive or size of motor we should pick it depending on the state.

Well I could turn and hit PA.

2700RPM she is just starting to smooth out. But Could always leave it in
4th.
