Rear view mirrors
Is the passenger side mirror actually useful? Also, I've seen cars with the main rear-view mirror mounted on the dash or higher at the top of the window. Any preferences?
thx |
A bullet mirror on the passenger side is useless. A small suction type rear view mirror in the upper RH corner of the windshield works much better.

Hey, I remember that Cobra. Nice paint job! :D
Some cobras have a 1/2" spacer (or so) to raise the dash rear view mirror. depends on your seating position and preference. I'm using a MG or something like that, a little taller with a slight convex curve. Dark Water Customs makes a mount for the top of the windshield if you want to relocate your dash mounted mirror. I've always wondered about vibration. http://www.darkwatercustoms.com/purchase.php I've seen owners (like John Marsy's JBL) use the SPA race mirrors for center and side - Great mirrors. I switch to the GT side mirrors for track events. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/adv...RORS&iorb=4764 |
You should Ron, I stole the color combination from your car. The mirrors are raydot with windscreen adapters.
|
Ed, did a web search for " raydot with windscreen adapters " and the only item was the Finish Line Side Post, which does not appear to be the same as you mentioned/pictured.
Do you have a source for the " windscreen adapters " ? ............thanks |
Go to Pep Boys and get the nanny mirror. It's 6 bucks or so and attaches with a suction cup. Gives great all around view.

Bob, thanks, had previously obtained, keeps falling off. How did you secure yours ? The one I have has a lever for activating the suction.

There's always the Japanese solution, which puts oversized rearviews on the midpoint of the front fender...
I've found I can adjust my driver's side Raydot (emphasis on the "dot") and dash-level center mirror so that I can see what's behind me... but it is like peering through a pair of portholes. |
This clip on Convex mirror was recommended to me by someone on CC. You can buy it on eBay (Broadway 240mm).
Works great. The only thing I don't like is that they printed the name on the mirror. The frame is black so it blends in. Looks a little out of place, but it doesn't stick out that much. That and the convex mirror in side mirror is perfect. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...002_Small_.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...003_Small_.jpg |
I have the standard middle rear view mirror at the top of the windshield and it works fine. No vibrations. It is the same mount as Doug shows, except the use of glue to the glass. It is not a suction cup to the glass. It is similar to the common glass mount found on most common factory cars. I think I could use a larger mirror like Doug's!
|
Don, they are the same ones from finish line. I just tweeked them a bit. The raydots mounting bolt was extended one inch by welding a bolt to it. One half inch aluminum tubing for the spacer.
|
Ed,
I did the same with using bolt/nut "couplers" (instead of welding) from Home Depot/Ace Hardware store and a 1" chrome drain pipe as the cover/extension. Lots of stores sell RayDots. couldn't use the Broadway Wide mirror - too much vibration. Maybe I should bet a smaller motor? :3DSMILE: Still driving the Jag? |
Nah, looking for something else these days.
|
Step on the gas and look over your shoulder.

I have a dash mount rear view mirror. When seated in the car it blocks my view over the right fender. I like the idea from Dark Water Customs using a brachet to mount the mirror on top of the windshield.

Mattpatt, I am a new Superformance owner and went through this issue a few weeks ago. If you want to make the Superformance outside driver's mirror functional, please see the thread "Bad Start to a New Relationship" and, in particular, ztarum's fix. His fix, combined with a convex mirror from Finish Line Accessories, worked for me. You still need to look back, but at least with this fix, the mirror aims at traffic to your left and not to the pavement.

To all for the great ideas with rear viewing in my Cobra. My dash mount mirror problem is fixed with 2 1/4" extended shaft. Now will play with fender mirror first trying the convex route, then the wing window mirror if all else fails.

Cannonball Run
I liked what the Italian Ferrari driver said in "Cannonball Run" at the start of their cross country race in New York city... He reached up, grabbed the rear view mirror and snatched it off the windshield mount...throwing it over his right shoulder, as he shouted...
"What'sa behind'a me isss-a not imporrrrtant...!" |
