Air Conditioning in SPF

Just got a new Superformance and the prior owner put Vitage Air in it. The AC works great and blows really cold. My question is does anyone have any ideas of how to clean up the install and make it look better. Any pictures of a clean install would be great. I have included a pic of the train wreck that I am dealing with.

Thanks, Jake

The first thing you should do is add another throttle spring.

Probably replacing all the silver material with something black would visually helpful. Especially the aluminum "dryer vent" across the back firewall. Perhaps a sheet of carbon fiber or just a dress-up aluminum plate on the side, Consider the header heat when picking materials.
One other thing, check the mounting of your coil. I believe that type should not be mounted in the horizontal position.

Move the a/c unit to the trunk and if every body gets to be pickie---those are the wrong distributor cap wire ends for those hold down plates---

Jake....Looks like it's going to be difficult to dress up the AC install with it being so crammed into place. Did the car come with a hard top? If not, AC in a convertible in Western Wash. does seem a little out of place. Cobras don't have much room for add-ons as you probably already have witnessed. Don't know how effecient the AC will be on a hot summer day, AC blowing on your legs, chugging around town with so much under hood heat. Best of luck with the project.

How about move the blower and heat exchanger under the dash, behind the firewall?

I had AC on mine years ago and that is what I did. The only parts under the hood were the compressor and the dryer.

I agree 100% with your comments. That was what I was thinking. I just wanted to see if someone might have an idea that I did not think of. I like the carbon fiber idea. Any ideas on a different type of black tubing? It has 6" with insulation and then 4" tubing inside that.

Not a option as we take week long trips in the car and need all the trunk space we can get.

need to mount the coil vertically

Can you pull back the aluminum shielding and let us see what is under there? Is your factory heater still hooked up under the dash?

Looks like all the air from the evaporator goes into the driver's footwell. Maybe you could route that big dryer tube into the passenger footwell and split it into smaller tubes feeding outlets on both sides of the car.

Jake 04-23-2011 06:22 AM

I have been crazy busy and unable to get more pics taken. There are now 2 round vents that spin in the driver area. Onr just in front of the shifter and one below my right knee attached to the tunnel. The dryer tube goes behind the engine and then over the bell housing where it splits into 2 pieces to attach onto the vents. The car has a glove box so there is zero room to add anything under the dash.

I'd remove all the A/C components completly and go with the standard 2-80 model. End of problem...

It is good to see you are still alive Mark. I bet Ray would be up for the challenge. I hope to see you this spring and summer on some drives. Let's go blow through some $5.00 a gallon gas.

I have A/C in my Backdraft. The unit was installed in my trunk against the
wall between the trunk and the seats. The battery that was there was moved to the rightside fender well. I made plexiglass windows that fit in the door and a have a bimini top and a fine screen windbreak for the roll bars and between them, with all this on it keeps it pretty cool.

The engine bay photo just sends sudders up my spine, like those web sites "ifixeditrealgood.com" or something similar.

next up -- plywood sidepipe hangers.
