What's the trick on lifting out the Battery?
My dang Battery Tender died sometime last winter and while they replaced it, now my battery is dead and the Tender won't charge it. You guys know how heavy lead is right? Is there a trick to lifting the battery out the trunk battery hole? My skinny little fingers can't quite rip it out of there. Do I need to buy a battery gripper of sorts? Thanks,

This won't help you ,but I just replaced my battery,and I put down some strong shelving material cut extra long so I could wad it up on both sides and grab it to lift the battery out.

I think your going to need to get one of those belt battery straps to get it out. It was hard enought to get my old Optima out with the strap that is part of the battery.

If it's an Optima they have provisions for a handle if you can get it in there, mine did but didn't know until after muscling it out.

Very strong fingers, or a battery strap. Those are the only two methods I'm aware of.

if you are not reusing the battery, try 2 pair of vise grips one on each terminal.

Two ways I have gotten batteries out of those tight boxes. One, I have a leather strap type handle with a steel end on each end that has a hole that fits over the terminals on top of the battery. Slide it down to thew bottom of the terminal and then as you lift it twists upward locking itself to each terminal and I can just lift the batter out. The other was was I had about an inch on each end of the battery and I got two steel strips about 1" wide and bent the bottom ends at right angles. After working them down beside the battery I could lift each end of the batter just enough to twist the steel strips and make the bent end go under the battery. Then I just lifted the two strips and they pulled the battery up. This is much easier on the hands of you tape or pad the top part of your lifting strips.

YIKES.....Don't use heavy gauge wire between the battery clamps...
An old section of fan belt works well or nylon rope.
If you ar determined to use heavy gauge wire contact me first so I can video the battery extraction and imminant fire for UTube....

I see your point for safety. But if the battery is dead and the coating on the wire is an insulator for the clamps it should work. But safety first.

Ditto and these ding dongs are telling the guy to lift out with the battery terminals :CRY: I saw one explode that was supposedly dead for two years in a boat when a guy was loosening the terminal clamp. Get a strong 19 yearn old neighbor kid to lift it out.

Come on guys, it's a freakin battery.
Granted it is in an awkward place, and it is heavy. I just disconnected the two poles and grabbed the thing and lifted it out.
When replacing, leave the plastic carry strap in place. Won't be so hard the next time.

I bought your wheels (thank you very much) now come on up and yank my battery out. No wait, don't come. The guy I bought my incredible Cobra from put a KMart Battery in it to sell. I think KMart should pay ME to have one of their classy batteries in a Cobra! I like your suggestion though, man up and pull the sucker out!@

Good job Ward. Now, when you put it back, either use a battery strap or place a piece of strong flexible rubber or plastic under the battery so that both ends extend out of the battery box. That way you can use the ends to lift it out easier the next time. Still an awkward position to lift. |
Not a bad idea to also add one of those battery acid mats at the bottom of the fiberglass battery compartment. Also, if you contact me offline with your email address, I'll send you a few photos of a nice battery hold down clamp design I came up with for the Superformance MKIII's. Parts are available locally and are dirt cheap... Yes I know the battery is a snug fit to begin with left and right, forward & backward, but the battery does bounce up and down in the battery box...
