Inner fender well coating

Is there something I should apply to the inner fender wells, going over the car. Thank you for your Help.

Im not sure what you mean by "going over the car" but I applied truck bed liner and foam pads to the fender wells to prevent the star cracks that are caused by debris from the road.

With foam pads, you mean the black foam, like aircon hose lagging?

I got mine from top of the hill, not sure if i need them with the spray in bed liner but did it anyway. One fell out afer three years but they worked pretty good. You can make your own if you want.

Thank you for your suggestions the car has 10000 miles on it, and I notices that the inner fender wells look like they could use a little protection.

There was a thread about this Backdraft Boys. I think the guy removed rear wheel and painted inside with bed liner for pickup trucks.

What color would you use if your car is not black?

Craig from Top of the Hill installed mine 10+ years ago, and even running sticky tires that throw rocks (GY Slicks and Avons), I don't have one star on my fenders.

They are not cheap, but I highly recommend them. I would not think twice about doing it again.

Last year I did my rear wheel wells with rubberized undercoating. I'll soon be cleaning the car again for an upcoming indoor show in March - I'll be able to get a good view how it held up I heard that someone was using Bedliner coating on their wheelwells.

No luck finding the post so I thought I would post it here. Has anybody done this?! If so, would you do it again?
Do you think black or the body color of the non-black cars would look better?

Maybe the body color would not be noticed?

Please tell me your thoughts.

For what it's worth - I have SP3033 (~1 year old with 1600 miles on it). It came with factory installed protective foam on all fenders. I just discovered that I picked up 2 "stars" on a front fender. Inspection under the fender shows the stars are located just in front of where the foam ends and is where small stone "witness" marks are. The foam doesn't cover enough area for full protection. Looks like I have some foam installation work ahead of me. <{:>(((

Wow! Sorry to hear about your stars! I have the same foam "mini" protection pads you indicate. It doesn't seem they cover much of the wheel well. I've bought some 1/8" neoprene locally and glue but haven't installed it yet. I was worried about the possibility of the glue dissolving the fiberglass. It is probably not an issue, but I worried anyway. I want to get come R-comp tires for autocross and thought I better have the wheel wells protected before I do that.

I have a Backdraft roadster so every scratch is on my watch. I don't "patina" on a replica, either. Is the self adhesive fender liner very heavy or porous?

Is it in a kit for wheel wells or is it a custom for each installation?

OK - I found a black foam that's very similar to the pad installed at the factory. I think the factory installs it for noise reduction - not stone protection.

I got the foam from McMaster-Carr. $39. It's PN 86375K252. The description is: Quick Recovery Super Resilient Foam, Adhesive backed, 1/4" thick, 24" x 24", Soft. It feels very much like the factory stuff. The adhesive seems adequate but if it lets got I'll use some butyl or other adhesive.

I installed it today in front of the factory foam (front fenders only). There was just enough for both sides. I noted that there were lots of white specks under the fender - I think these are where stones hit so the pattern shows where the protection is needed.

Follow-up. Took the cobra for a 90 mile ride after installing additional stone guard sheets (see above post). Looks like the adhesive isn't holding so well (guards starting to fall off). By the way - I cleaned the fenders several times with water untill no dirt came off - then toweled them off with alcohol (to help remove the water) before installing the guard sheets. I just ordered 3M 08008 adhesive - will see if that works.

It's really a shame that Hi-Tech didn't just add ~18" of foam when they installed the factory foam. Would have saved a nice paint job and hassle for their customers.

Lance - you should send this thread to Hi-Tech.

Final follow-up. I re-ordered the foam (but without the adhesive on one side). I installed this material using the 3M 08008. It's perfect so far - I've driven it ~ 70 miles (cooler weather, 55 - 70 degrees) with no indication of loss of adhesion.
