Default Which size Avon CR6ZZ 15 for a MKIII

Hi guys,

I dont trust those old SUV tires anymore, that have been on there since I dont know when.

However, LucyLou (my SPF Cobra) should get new sox and I tend towards the Avons CR6ZZ. These are available also in Germany through a race track support dealer.

The sizes for the front is fairly obvious 245/60-15 but the rear confuses me.

275/55-15 or 295/50-15 - I am afraid to touch the fenders. Did you have to raise the suspension for the 295s ?

Any input is very much appreciated.

I run the 295s on the rear and they are fine. Olthoff Racing suggested that size. In fact, my second set of Avons ships out from SASCO tomorrow. I got even tire wear, easy balance and decent mileage out of the first set.

Yes and DOT rated if you are here in States. Lots of discussion over the years on these tires. No one has ever complained about anything except the price. Use "AVON CR6ZZ" as a search term but get a fresh cup of coffee first.

Thanks for the quick response. I've been through many cups of coffee, but coudnt really find a "for sure" answer on the 295 size and SPF chassis. I guess, I need to measure my ride height, since I touched the tires with the inside of the finder already a couple of times. Now, I am driving the BF Goodridge 275. That was the reason for my concern.

Thanks again - and yes the damn Avons are expensive. A set in Germany runs 1600 Euros which is close to 2 Grand.

I am surprised that you are rubbing. Mine do not even during the occasional track episode. Are they the stock wheels and offsets? As for price, a bit cheaper here and likely about the amount of the VAT. US1750 on the dock. I lived in Germany six years, your English is quite good. I could measure the clearance in the wheel well if you can be specific. My car is sitting pretty much stock in the rear.

The 295 is a shorter tire than the 275/60/15. I saw an SPF with the 295 avons on the rear yesterday.

I added a couple of pics to my profile and reading up on ride height at secondstrike.

Thanks for the compliment on my english. I used to live in Denver, CO. Lived there, loved there, raced there and then got divorced hehe.

It's been almost 10 years, since my son and I moved back to Germany. I do miss the States a lot and it felt more home than here sometimes.

The problem with some of the S-rated SUV tires ist mostly grip and speed. Since the Cobra wants to stretch her legs once in a while, I would like to be on rubber that is made for it and not 180km/h rated SUV tires. I am still debating with myself if I make the step to visit a race track with my baby - hmm. I wrecked too many cars at the Nordschleife and the Cobra should remain a keeper.

Thanks for your input - I'll go ahead and try the 295s (if they are available).

Do you mean short in the sense of lower sidewalls? How about the footprint, the width - is it significantly wider than a 275 (depending on make and model of course).

A 50 series tire would be less tall in the sidewall, and you are correct in that the 295's would be wider than 275's. I have 15/50/295's on the rear of my ERA and there is no issue. Not sure if it would be a problem with 60's on the back. That extra height could be a problem.

I thought the standard tire sizes for a Superformance MkIII were:
  • front: 255/60R15
  • Rear: 275/60R15

The rears could also take 295/50R15.

Avon does not produce a 255/60x15 according to the SASCO site. If they did, the overall height would likely be slightly taller than the 295s.

... and I found out, that I have Flintstone rubber on my Cobra.

Here is the DOT label: 498 which should mean 49th. week of 1998. I was told from a tire specialist that after the year 2000, the label was changed to 4 digits.

Is it really possible, that the previous owner did 17000 miles on the first set of tires - wow (BF Goodridge).

Anyhow - the Avons are ordered and I cant wait.

Oh - the rear was almost 1 inch to low and the front approx 3/4 of an inch. No wonder, she was rubbing. But rubbing is racing ... but I guess, this doesn't apply here :-)

Nice pic.

i have a (probably dumb) question:

I have standard trigo rear wheels, and plan to fit avons.

Tyre choices in the avons are 295, 275 and 245.
Will the side profile look significantly different with each of these fitted to rear wheel trigos? I know these tyres have slightly different 'heights' but my question relates to the appearence of the side wall and any potential 'bulge'. I know I wont get the balloon tyre look that Billboards have, but wondered how the different size width/height ratios impact on the side wall appearance.
