a nice looking street car just came up on Cobra Country this weekend. Less than $50K, but it has a Mustang VIN tag and title. Is that even legal???

That is 1075.
Based on when this car was built, you are in a gray area of what was and what was not allowed at that time, in the original title state. Provided there is not a duplicate VIN floating around the states, yes, it may be perfectly legal on this car.
Still a fine line that needs to be walked when dealing with this one depending on what state you are located in.

True dat! A "non-conforming" car even if registered in the US for years, cannot be re-imported. Ask me how I know.........................

Isn't the U.S. import prohibition 25 years on non-compliant cars...? In other words, if the car is 25 years or older, you can import it just fine, no?

The problem with the Superformace for under 50K is the vin# belongs to a 65 Mustang convertable. So what happens when the police or DMV inspect the car and the vin does not match the car? Guys in Cailifornia have have cars impounded. What are your thoughts?

That was my understanding. It is also my understanding there was a petition started in 2011 to change the 25 year rule to 15 years (see link below). That would align it with the Canadian 15 year rule, but it seems to have died. I suppose somebody on CC could start another one, should they feel this is an important issue. It sounds like it needs a minimum of 25,000 signatures before it will be reviewed by the White House.

Maybe there were too many questions about the legality of the car and he pulled the ad?

Can't say I've ever seen a for sale posting canceled off there before. Perhaps the legal side of reality hit the seller. Perhaps Hillbank Motors bought it and it will soon be relisted for $79,995 :LOL::LOL:

Got it. I thought perhaps Big Island in Kailua-Kona area. My wife and I drove the east side of Oahu 3 years ago - same time as the Honolulu Marathon. We were driving around the island and took our rental into the residential areas as we worked our way north, stopped for lunch at a shrimp truck, then checked out Turtle Bay and the surfing on the north shore. I have to say we found the Dole plantation disappointing (too much of a tourist trap), but the rest was enjoyable.
There s/b enough twists in the roads to keep you entertained, though I hear Hawaii PD are pretty strict on speed limits.
We've been to the Big Island and Oahu, Maui is next, then Kauai.

Suddenly with a new titled VIN #, too. Somebody has a friend at the GA DMV. I'd like to see a copy of that title. Too bad we couldn't get updated/new photos of this car. The engine shot still shows the Mustang VIN tag on the passenger foot box.
Odometer shows over 26K miles, but the description says 22K but with a replacement motor claiming "less than 4000" on the engine.

If you give me your e-mail address I will be happy to send you a copy of the certificate of origin and the Superformance vin tag. The mustang vin tag was removed as the car is not a Mustang. The owner had the certificate of origin and original vin tag with the car. I will update the ad with photos of the proper vin tag. The car was inspected by the local sheriffs office as well.
I just added a photo of the original Superformance vin to the ebay ad. If anyone has any spefic questions please feel free to ask.

What did you end up paying as a final sale price? New SPFs are around $80K with some nice used ones in low to mid $50K and some even in the $40K range.
