Pi$$ed off..........right now

Today is the first REAL warm day... and I am putting new rims/tires on the car for a spin.

and.. oh did I mention the left front spinner just f'n broke off~~???????????????

NOT HAPPY right now

buddyg 05-08-2014 01:10 PM

Holy crap! Has that ever happened to anyone? YIKES!

Mark IV 05-08-2014 01:30 PM

It does happen once in while. Either a flaw or King Kong was beating on it.

Checking stock for you.........

See the video Olthoff Racing has with Dennis demo'ing how to fasten the knock-offs.

Igofastr 05-08-2014 01:47 PM

Well,

I'd suspect a casting defect, as I've beaten on them pretty good without breaking. You can still drive the thing, though so not all is lost.

But I probably wouldn't duct-tape it back on. :)

Don't you get it yet?

Step away from the Cobra! :p
Give it a day. You never know when the mojo (good or bad) strikes.

blown871 05-08-2014 02:46 PM

agreeed.
...

madmaxx 05-08-2014 02:55 PM

Geez if thats a big deal to you sell the car ASAP!!!!! You not a fit for it. As the other posted stated the "wing" does nothing to keep the wheel on, go for a drive. I have beat the sheet out of spinners before with no issues, just a simple casting flaw.

blown871 05-08-2014 02:56 PM

.. oh and I was transferring some home made wine this morning in the basement and a bottle smashed all over the floor!! RED VINO EVERYWHERE!!

agreed; maybe time to go for a ride.......

Clayboy 05-08-2014 03:13 PM

Been there, done that...

I got rid of my aluminum spinners and went with the stainless version from George Petrus at Cobra Racing Suspension. I also now use plenty of never-seize and before I start knocking them off I give them a shot of WD40. Works like a dream.
Here is a link to the spinners.

WOW: cool thanks!!

Great Asp 05-08-2014 05:43 PM

Not sure what year your car is, but at one point it was known that the spinners were less than they needed to be on an SPF.

The fix was the current "forged" aluminum spinners.

If you are on the SCOF forum someone with a better memory than mine can fill you in on which chassis were suspect.

blown871 05-08-2014 05:47 PM

Yes. I got a PM on it.
I have 1413 and it falls into that category from what I understand. Will get on the SCOF forum later and seek it out.

Just to update: Took out the Chevelle AND the Cobra tonight. All good! Love the new tires on the Cobra.. WHAT a handling and acceleration difference. (not wild about the wheel well gap... may try to adjust springs to bring car down).

Great Asp 05-08-2014 05:50 PM

Yeah, I owned 1380 for some time and had to change my spinners.

Best of luck to you!

Glad that you were able to get out, just got back home form a ride in mine and it was soooo nice:3DSMILE:

Mark Brye 05-08-2014 06:04 PM

Have done that twice over the years. I just keep a couple spare RH and LH on the wall in the garage for just that reason.

601HP 05-08-2014 06:20 PM

I've had the George Petrus stainless steel knock-offs for 20 years. I've beat the crap out of them a few times. No bendy, breaky or denty. :JEKYLHYDE:D:p

The early cars had forged spinners, the later cars all come with cast, but only some of the "middle" cars had problems with the casting. Spinner problem was between chassis #800 and #1200. If you beat on only one spinner ear to remove a tire you can break it regardless. Spinners should all be removed once a year to clean and lubricate. It is not uncommon for knockoffs to be over tightened. Watch Dennis's video and listen to the sound.

Dwight 05-08-2014 08:25 PM

they gave you three to beat on. You still have two good ones. Go for a ride and order a new spinner tonight.

X2 on the stainless spinner from George. Hint...If you go stainless decide when you buy if you want natural or polished finish. If you get natural you won't be able to polish them yourself if you change your mind later. Stainless is just too hard for the average home shop setup to handle. On the plus side, they're really easy to clean if their polished. Don't need anything but a damp rag.
